GORI, Georgia - Russia said Monday it had begun withdrawing from the conflict zone in Georgia, but it held fast to key positions and sent some of its troops in the opposite direction — closer to the Georgian capital.
Russian troops and vehicles roamed freely around the strategically located central city of Gori, Russian forces appeared to blow up the runway at a military base in the western town of Senaki.
There were few signs Russia was following the terms of a cease-fire to end the short war, which has driven tensions between Russia and the West to some of their highest levels since the breakup of the Soviet Union.
In Paris, the French foreign minister said it appeared "we are witnessing the start" of a Russian withdrawal, but warned France would call an emergency meeting of the European Council to talk about consequences for Russia if that was not the case.
But U.S. defense and military officials said they had seen no significant movement yet of Russian troops withdrawing from Georgia.

The potential parallels between this and 1938/1939 are scary:
Georgia/Ossetia were much like Sudentenland/Czechoslovakia.
A possible “Anschluss” between Russia and Belarus.
The Ukrainian port of Sebastopol becoming the new “Danzig”, and the whole of the Crimea like the Polish Corridor.
The more things change the more they stay the same. Relatively speaking.

Where is that guy ya’ll always post from the Iraq war that was saying stuff “Like the Americans are not in Bagdhad” and you could see the tanks behind him.

it will be interesting to see whether merkel, sarkozy, brown, et al have the balls to stand up to putin.

I thought the UN was supposed to be called in to handle this. If the UN can’t put together some troops to help this country, why should we think they would have done any different with Iraq? All those “Let the UN handle it” people have egg on their face now.
NATO should recognize Georgia as a member in their emergency meeting. That instantly gives NATO the right to fire on Russian troops in Georgia if they do not leave immediately. Hopefully we can sneak something in or redeploy somewhat before that is done.

It was a sarcastic joke because we all know the UN isn’t good for anything.

This whole Russian / Iran thing and Russia now clearing a path south to Israel is just like reading Ezekiel 38-39.
Whatever people say about the right or wrong of the Iraq-invasion-war, it is "Biblical" in it's results. Why? Because, in all the previous Israeli wars, Iraq and Egypt were at the forefront. In Ezekiel's prophesy, the 'war of Gog & Magog against Jerusalem-Israel, Egypt and Iraq (a.k.a. Babylon or Chaldeans) are not in the grouping of nations going against Israel. Iran and Russia are though...
If not for the removal of Saddam Hussein, Iraq would again be at the head of the line against Israel. You see? It's Biblical.

Over the years plenty of Americans have wanted the US to withdraw from Iraq, through Tehran.
Looks like Russia is going to withdraw from Georgia, through Armenia.
