Winning the west ... Obama plots route to victory in Republican heartland
The Guardian ^ | 8-19-2008 | Suzanne Goldenberg

When Montana's governor, Brian Schweitzer, launched his campaign for re-election this summer he chose to be pictured on a horse lassooing a calf, and in silhouette against a barn door, presumably after a long hard day on the ranch.

What was not mentioned was the word Democrat - a party affiliation that in some parts of the west still conjures up associations with gay marriage, gun control and abortion.

Those sensibilities could be in for a shake-up as Barack Obama launches the Democrats' most aggressive drive for years for votes from the Rocky Mountain west.

The strategy unrolling now across the west could turn once reliably Republican states such as Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and possibly even Montana into America's new electoral battleground. But it is Colorado which is viewed as the biggest prize.

"Colorado defines competitive," said Dick Wadhams, the chairman of the state Republican party. "I think either party could carry Colorado."

It all hinges on how you define Democrat - a political label that has been comprehensively altered by a new generation of elected politicians in the west - and an impressive grassroots organisation now being assembled by the Obama campaign.

Even if it were true that Coloroda is seriously in play, it won't be on Aug. 29, imho. I'm betting that Denver, at least, will be fed up with democrats after the DNC gets through with it.

If the hate-filled freak show doesn't do it, the enormous and presumptuous inconveniences imposed upon Coloradans for the convenience of the dems will. Closing their main freeway and arteries from 5 pm til 11:30 for Obama's security at Invesco is going to cause businesses to shut down early, people to skip work altogether, huge traffic snarls etc etc. People trying to get home, get their kids out of daycare, or go cross town to their second job are not going to be thinking kindly of the party that caused it all. It's going to be a circus and a disaster.

Now add in the mess, the expense, the grandstanding and preening and hypocrisy, all witnessed up close and personal by the tens of thousands of seething service workers, their presumed base--hotel maids, bartenders, wait staff, cab drivers, etc.--stiffed for a week on tips, ordered around and demeaned by the party of the "little people". Nope, I don't see Colorodo going blue.

I just got back from a vacation in Colorado. I await with interest the results of the DNC and the election. I can best describe how my vacation went by quoting an email I sent to my sister on my return:

The weather was decent, and we’re already making tentative plans for a return trip in June/July 2009. This time bypassing Denver and concentrating on Colorado Springs-Pueblo-sand dunes-northern NM (North east or north central, maybe both....Part of the reason we’re skipping Denver in 2009 is, it is extremely irritating to go up to a cash register again and again and again, intending to spend $150+ dollars on "stuff”, and be confronted not only with Obama stickers, but “literature” and stickers suggesting Republicans and conservatives are stupid/evil/racist. I knew Denver is considered a liberal city, but I never imagined it would be so entirely lopsided. We saw NOT ONE McCain or Republican sticker, unless you count the one oh-so-clever “Republicans For Voldemart” sticker. I wonder if McCain/Republican voters are too intimidated to display their support, lest the Openminded and Tolerant Ones bash out their windshields (or the cars’ drivers)? One would think sheer economic logic (Don’t risk antagonizing customers with blatant political beliefs) would keep the politicizing down, but no. So they will get not one thin dime from us in 2009, unless we fly and we HAVE to go through Denver’s Airport.

In general,

to defeat the left,
expose the left.

The only way they get into power is by obfuscating their beliefs. Bambi tried to hide his at Saddleback, but it was clear what they were.
