Ike wasn’t sure if he was a republican or a democrat and was
being courted by both parties to run in 52 and he had a hard time making the decision..

Ike wasnt the best of generals either. He played political hardball with the Brits all through WW2 while our boys died as a result.
Both Bradley and Patton did not care for the mans decissions. Especially Bradley after The Bulge.
But he made a hell of a clerk as MacArther said.

And then, when he was elected, with GOP majorities in both houses, he announced that there would be no roll-back of the New Deal. Instead of pushing back at the first opportunity post-war, it became entrenched by 8 years of GOP acceptance. The GOP lost its majority shortly after. Kind of like 2006, when it became clear that the GOP had become just like the Dems, might as well vote for Dems.
