"Until they have reformed their lives" ( No Holy Communion for pro-abortion Catholics!)
California Catholic Daily ^ | August 21, 2008 | staff

Posted on 08/21/2008 4:43:58 PM PDT by kellynla

Rome, Aug 19, 2008 / (CNA) -- Archbishop Raymond Burke, prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, the highest judicial authority of the Holy See, said this week that Catholics who publicly support abortion -- especially politicians -- should not receive Communion, and that ministers of Communion should be responsibly charitable in denying it to them if they ask for it “until they have reformed their lives.”

[[Burke082108.jpg]]In an interview with the magazine Radici Christiane, Archbishop Burke pointed out that there is often a lack of reverence at Mass when receiving Communion. “Receiving the Body and Blood of Christ unworthily is a sacrilege,” he warned. “If it is done deliberately in mortal sin it is a sacrilege.”

To illustrate his point, he referred to “public officials who, with knowledge and consent, uphold actions that are against the Divine and Eternal moral law. For example, if they support abortion, which entails the taking of innocent and defenseless human lives. A person who commits sin in this way should be publicly admonished in such a way as to not receive Communion until he or she has reformed his life,” the archbishop said.

I predict the Bishops in this country will NOT enforce this. The Bishops are unquestionably the weak link in The U.S. Church.

said this week that Catholics who publicly support abortion -- especially politicians -- should not receive Communion

So.. are the priests going to consult a master list of naughty Catholics before dishing out the communion?

How do they identify those who cannot receive communion?

I think this is just a gesture, not an enforceable edict.

“predict the Bishops in this country will NOT enforce this. The Bishops are unquestionably the weak link in The U.S. Church.”

Maybe some will... mabye some won’t...but it is up to American Catholics that it is enforced!!! Just like it was up to American Catholics to get rid of the bad priests!

The U.S. Church, like anything else, is only as strong as the weakest link. And with the help of God the Father, God the Son & God the Holy Spirit, we Catholics will “get it done!”

Maybe I’m not qualified to comment because it’s not my church in question. But isn’t Communion only allowed to be withheld due to the person’s personal actions, not by what he advocates in terms of public policy? For example, with regard to abortion, shouldn’t the church only apply this to someone who has personally participated in an abortion? I’m not pro-abort, but it would be a shame if Catholic officials were perceived to undermining their independence from the political process.

This is a "thought" sin and while I do not agree with abortion in any way...There are other "sins"...How does a priest weed out the others??

It’s certainly enforceable in the case of high-profile, well known politicians. I can assure you that every priest in DC recognizes, say, Nancy Pelosi or any of the others. But Wuerl is the weak link here, and I think it’s pretty safe to say that nothing will happen, not in DC nor probably in most of these politicians’ home dioceses, either.

BTW, this doesn’t come out of the blue. These people are usually first spoken to by the priest or bishop, warned, asked to change their lives, and then forbidden to receive Communion. So far there hasn’t been a “list,” although in the case of people who have been forbidden to receive Communion but still present themselves, I suppose that’s always a possibility. However, as I said, pro-abortion politicians are safe in DC.

Did you read the article.
I think it's self-explanatory.
Until those who support abortion, specifically politicians, shall I say “change their ways” they are not to receive Holy Communion...pretty damn clear from where I'm sitting.

Nonsense, if you support abortion promoting politicians you are guilty of aiding and abetting murder. I hope these politicians and people like Doug Kimic are denied communion until they come to the realization it is murder and against the laws of the Catholic church.

with politicians their statements and voting record should be sufficient to identify them and their faces are well known. A NARL spokesperson who regularly shows up on the news would be readily identifiable. For those whose faces don’t show up but are major advocates of abortion I’m sure that there are people who will identify them. I’d assume that this would also apply to those who push for capital punishment as well.

Voting for and advocating for a particular point of view are personal actions and for a politician making an act legal or illegal is a form of participating in the act itself one way or the other.

*** But isn’t Communion only allowed to be withheld due to the person’s personal actions, not by what he advocates in terms of public policy?***

Encouraging others to have an abortion IS a personal action. I would be as guilty of having an abortion as encouraging my daughter to have one. It’s still murder no matter how you do it. And when a politician votes for abortion, and then receives Communion, he/she is telling the church he/she is NOT a Catholic.

Salvation you’re a very nice lady and I would not presume to debate you on points of doctrine.

I’m just more than a little ill of being aware of so very many liberal politicians who know darn well that they have excommunicated themselves walking up and getting communion from some priest who happily obliges.

The liberal Democrats are taunting The Church and using The Host as a way of pretending that their standing in The Church is just spiffy and fine! It is not enough to say they have excommunicated themselves. They need to be denied communion!

I’m glad you asked. I see you don’t know the real meaning of confession. The priest is merely the representative of God. The priest forgives a sin on the condition that the repentant is telling the truth. If such repentant lies in Confession, he is committing still another sin. And THAT’S when God sorts it out.

The requirements for a good Confession:
Examination of conscience
Confession of any mortal sin
A true repentance for having sinned
Determination never to repeat the sin
Praying the Act of Contrition
Doing penance

How do they identify those who cannot receive communion?

For a lot of politicians...easy. Michigan Governor Granholm, for example...she probably attends two, maybe three churches on a regular basis. Every priest in the state knows who she is, knows whay her positions are. The same could be said for many elected officials.

I know a lot of priests and deacons. I even know a bishop pretty well. They all follow politics--not rabidly, but certainly well enough to know who the CINOs are.

I'm a Catholic, kelly. I find your attitude on this thread appalling.

There are a lot of folks on FR who do not share our faith. A few of those freepers have made comments on this thread, comments which seemed (to me, at least) to be inviting dialogue. You have chosen to attack those freepers rather than engage in discussion.

Sometimes I understand why Catholic freepers are given such a hard time on this forum. Thanks a bunch, Kel. Really Christian of you.
