China’s Revealing Spectacle of Lies
Pajamas Media ^ | August 21, 2008 | Josh Strawn

From faked CGI opening ceremony fireworks to “16-year-old” gymnasts, China has squashed the arguments of the supra-national idealists like it squashed the Tiananmen Square protests: ruthlessly, decisively, and with a brazen disregard for how bad it makes them look on the world stage.

The first question that comes to mind is: should this come as a surprise? It isn’t as if China thinks we’re ignorant of their internal repression and human rights abuses. It also can’t be that we think those gymnasts are 16. Coming as it has in a time when formerly communist Russia has brutally flexed its own muscles for the world to see, not only should none of this come as a shock, but it can be read as part of an emerging and consistent theme. Hubris, these days attributed almost exclusively by most of the world to the United States, is not indigenous to America. Communist empires were never exactly humble and, despite their deceptive makeovers, their post-’89 incarnations aren’t either. China’s behavior at the Games reminds us that, in the great game of power politics, looking big is often more important than not looking bad....

"79-year-old Wu Dianyuan, center, and her neighbor Wang Xiuying, 77, wait to apply for a protest permit outside a public security bureau in Beijing on Monday."

Chinese authorities have ordered the two elderly women to spend one year in a labor camp after they applied to hold a protest during the Beijing Olympics against being forced from their homes, a relative said Wednesday.

There are so many people willing to be fooled out of dangerously misguided idealism or ignore China's problem because of huge (real or perceived) monetary gains.

China has gigantic problems. As I see it, we’re going to have to FEED those people for ten years from the point they realize they have a problem until they find a way to deal with it, those orange sunsets in California are Chinese topsoil blowing into the stratosphere. Their farming practices are basically paleolithic.

it is shocking that complete, outright lying is just standard-operating-procedure for communists and yet it’s the leftist media here in the US who is surprised constantly and continues to accuse the US of doing the same thing.

Russia claims they are leaving Georgia and then they don’t. They sign a cease fire and then they invade Gori. Same old sh$t.

China puts a 13 yr old on the high bars and produces their own government documents saying she is 16. No big whoop. China promised it wouldn’t rain during the games (it has had four days of cancelled or delayed events thus far) and told us that the stuff in the air was simply humidity (which didn’t seem to go away even when it was raining).

And if you question them they call you an imperialist lying pig.

Same commies, different country.

One of our Freeps posted a link recently showing how Chinese skin alive animals for their fur. It was one of the most heartless, despicable cruel practices I have ever seen.

Never mind lying. When a government puts two old ladies in the joint for a year, just for pulling papers for a protest permit, they’re bad, bad people, in a way that makes liars by comparison quaintly charming.

From Sportswriter Dan Wetzel's column:

Jacques Rogge is so bought, so compromised, the president of the IOC doesn’t have the courage to criticize China for telling a decade of lies to land itself these Olympic Games. All the promises made to get these Games — on Tibet, Darfur, pollution, worker safety, freedom of expression, dissident rights — turned out to be phony, perhaps as phony as the Chinese gymnasts’ birthdates Rogge was way too slow to investigate.

The IOC just asked the Gymnastics Federation to investigate the age of the Chinese gymnasts based on ‘new information’. I don't know if it well do any good because it is very difficult to ‘prove’ someone is younger than their government says they are. I think they did catch Romania on the underage thing once...but I am sure China learned from that.

Is there any real advantage to having 12-year-olds competing at that level? You’d figure real teenagers would have to be stronger if nothing else...

To atheist Chicoms, people are just a resource to be exploited for whatever reason they want. I would not be at all surprised if the Chicoms were injecting fetal blood from forced abortions into their athletes.

I heard one of the announcers saying that younger ones have more flexible bones, are more limber, and are more fearless.

I suppose if you add this up you would get a gymnast who isn't afraid to try really difficult things.

Prepubescent women have a more stable center of gravity making it easier for them to control spins and flips. When a girl develops breasts and hips, her center of gravity changes and it becomes harder for her to maintain her form while doing her routine.
