As they meet for their national convention Monday through Thursday, Democrats are poised to shift their party's course and the country's.
They're turning to the left deeply against the war in Iraq, ready to use tax policy to take from the rich and give to the poor and middle class, and growing hungry after years of centrist politics for big-government solutions, such as a health-care overhaul, to steer the nation through a time of sweeping economic change.
They are, in short, more liberal than at any time in a generation and eager to end the Reagan era, which dominated not just the other party, but also their own, for nearly three decades.

Also, Obama promises a dramatically different tax policy, one that would raise taxes on the wealthy, cut taxes for the middle class and offer new "refundable" tax credits to the working poor that would wipe out tax liabilities and deliver anything left over in the form of checks.
He also wants to tax oil companies and use the money to give checks to the poor to pay for high fuel costs, or anything else.

At the same time, the party has new power centers in liberal groups such as Moveon.org and blogs such as dailykos.com, where antiwar fever and anti-Bush anger are magnified.

"Enormous dissatisfaction with the Republican Party has brought out the base more," said Democratic Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico.
Ever more vocal and influential heading into this year's election, that base fed the sense that the party should "return to its core values," Richardson said. "The rise of the Internet and bloggers have made the party more progressive."

Time to stock up on Vodka! We’re going to need it. That’s how the Russkis in the old Soviet Union got by.
Sure wish we had a candidate who would fight against this. Every time we “reach across the aisle,” they grab hold and yank us closer to their side.
Cutting taxes for the middle class is nothing but another Democrat lie ala Clinton, and Obama is worse.
Why no? Don’t tell me we are moving leftward. I simply can not believe it. /s
In the larger scheme, I also wonder when our language is going to catch up with reality and we stop speaking about "the Iraq war" in the present tense. What on earth is the statement "I am against the Iraq war" supposed to mean? It's like saying "I am against the French and Indian Wars". These events already happened. How can you "be against" them and even if you can, so what?
Maybe if there were anything resembling active warfare in Iraq then there would be something to be "against". But there is not. There is a military garrison stationed in Iraq and they do some counterinsurgency and training. Is that "the Iraq war"? What is there to be "against"?
Moreover, what violence there is in Iraq mostly takes the form of occasional, sporadic attacks on our troops. After all, people are fond of saying I can't say "the war" is over because there is still violence there. But if that violence is what makes "the Iraq war" not over, and you say you're "against the Iraq war", all you're saying is...you want that violence to cease. Well guess what, so do I! I want those dead-end idiots who commit violence against our troops stationed in Iraq to knock it off as well. I guess I too am "against the Iraq war".
So I guess all people really mean by being "against the Iraq war" at this point is that they are in favor of withdrawing that military presence, i.e. stationing those troops somewhere else (where? not sure). Indeed, it seems as if "the Iraq war" now means "the U.S. military presence in Iraq". But the problem there is, we've just heard that there's a tentative agreement whereby our military presence in Iraq will be scaled back by 2011. So there's nothing to be "against" in the first place; the military presence is going away whether one is "against" it or not.
Will our language ever catch up to this I wonder?

They’re turning to the left?? If the Dems in America go any further left the will be way past Socialist and knocking on the door of Communist.
Oh and that take from the rich and give to the poor and middle class.. You can stick that where the sun don;t shine because that is and always has been a load of crap. They will take from the middle class also. They always do. And the middle class will get a jar of vasoline for it and better like it.
Democrats are poised to pursue gargantuan-government solutions to satiate their insatiable appetite.
Really? If you ask a poor person if the Middle Class is considered rich, they'll say yes.
So the RATS are making the rich richer, and the true wealthy already
have their money. Too funny.
Congressional rats promised something new for the American people when they took control. Their rating is the lowest ever seen in history. They did and are doing NOTHING! Yet they promise the same idiocy with the messiah Obama, change you can believe in. WE ARE AT A CROSS ROADS, EITHER WE STAY ON THE ROAD OR WE ROLL OVER IN A DITCH. This cancer will win if we don’t treat it now

Democrats? Scruuummm.
It's like running in a circle that takes 30-years to complete.
Reads like a declaration of war.
Looks like somebody from the Democrats complained to McClatchy about the too truthful headline.
