Hassan Hakmoun is NOT Muslim. His religion by birth is pre-Islamic, synthesized by Maghrebi and Berber indigenous religions, and the religious rituals of escaped “black” African slaves, who escaped from Arab Muslim masters.
HE left Morocco to escape endemic religious and cultural institutional discrimination.
Gwana followers have suffered mightily under Arab Muslim rule in the Maghreb, and Hassan Hakmoun is probably the best known of Gwana musicians today.
He’s also lived most of his life in NYC working with Jewish musicians (and musicians of all stripes), including one I have known most of my life.
