NEW ORLEANS -- Louisiana officials and residents cast a wary eye on the Caribbean Sea as Tropical Storm Gustav strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane.

Track The Hurricane

At 11 a.m., the center of Gustav was located near latitude 17.9 north, longitude 72.4 west, or about 50 miles south of Port au Prince, Haiti.

Gustav is moving toward the northwest at 9 mph. A gradual turn to the west-northwest and a decrease in forward speed is expected later on Tuesday, forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami said.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 90 mph, with higher gusts. Gustav is a Category 1 hurricane and some strengthening is possible before making landfall in Haiti, with some weakening likely while the storm is over land, forecasters said. The storm could gain strength before approaching eastern Cuba on Wednesday.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles, and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles from the center.

Gustav is expected to produce total rainfall accumulations of 4 to 7 inches over southern Hispaniola and Jamaica, with isolated maximum amounts of up to 15 inches possible. The intense rains may produce life-threatening flash floods and mudslides.

Coastal storm surge flooding of 2 to 4 feet above normal tide levels can be expected near and to the east of where the center makes landfall.

This is projected to enter the Gulf as a Category 3 hurricane on Sunday. Not good for the Republican Convention in New Orleans.

Visit nhc/noaa.gov for detailed info on this storm.

Umm....the RNC is in St. Paul/Minneapolis.

If the storm is that big that it's going to stretch to Minnesota, then we all need to start repenting.

Um, the Republican convention is in the twin cities, not New Orleans.

I know all the FReepers were smart enough to get out two days before Katrina hit, and return only briefly to retrieve any undamaged belongings, right?

...right?

The RNC web site says, “Millions of people around the world will be watching as the Republican Party convenes its 39th nominating convention in Minneapolis-Saint Paul.”

Of course, another storm tearing into NOLA at the same time would give the media an excuse to diss the Repubs once again for failure to totally rebuild New Orleans immediately.

I guess it's a good thing they haven't rebuilt their city yet. We can just give them another $126,000,000,000 after next week's storm. /s

Quick! Get the school buses ready!

And never forget that George Bush doesn’t care about black people!

Geez, not this sh*t again!

Yep can you imagine the MSM having fun with that if New Orleans gets another hurricane at the same time as the Republican convention?

I heard a report about that this morning; as I recall, about 14-thousand former citizens of New Orleans are STILL living on the government tab.

Nice, huh?

Rush just mentioned this scenario and how it will be played out by the Drive-Bys: The rich Republicans, in their diamonds and limos, are at their big convention discussing more tax cuts for the rich while all coverage is on New Orleans where Michelle and Barry are seen helping out with sandbags.
