Bruce Springsteen off the bill at Barack Obama speech
The Telegraph ^ | August 27, 2008 | Alex Spillius

Bruce Springsteen will not be performing at Barack Obama's closing speech, his campaign said, as the Democratic candidate seeks to avoid association with celebrities.

In a break with recent tradition, the Democratic National Convention will be free of major performing artists after Republicans have successfully turned Mr Obama's surging popularity against him.

The 2004 convention featured cameos from Patti LaBelle, Willie Nelson, the Black Eyed Peas and Carole King, while in 2000 Stevie Wonder and Luther Vandross played in the main convention hall.

Earlier in the week Obama aides said Springsteen was to perform a short acoustic set at the 76,000-seater Invesco Field stadium where the Illinois senator will formally accept the party's presidential nomination on Thursday night. Other reports said Jon Bon Jovi had also been asked to sing.

But sources within the campaign said that the New Jersey-born rocker, who is a strong Obama backer, would not be singing, and denied that there had ever been any plans.

"Bruce Springsteen will not be performing at the convention. There have been some inaccurate reports out there on this; just wanted to set the record straight," a spokesman said.

In a further sign of confusion within the Obama ranks about the presentation of his big night, it emerged that he will deliver his speech from an elaborate columned stage resembling a miniature Greek temple, a setting that could easily lead to charges of an over-inflated ego.

The decision to exclude pop singers indicates how Republican rival Senator John McCain's effort to turn Mr Obama's fame into a weakness has rattled the Democrat's campaign. In the wake of Mr Obama's speech before 200,000 in Berlin, Mr McCain released an advert likening Obama to gossip-page perennials Paris Hilton and Britney Spears.

Hollywood stars including Ben Affleck, Josh Brolin, Annette Bening and Spike

Did I miss something? Since when did building a dime-store Olympus to house your messiah complex become a bad thing?

As an unrelated question, if, during his coronation, Obama walked out to the paper-mache altar, dagger in hand, and asked for volunteers for human sacrifice, in order to defeat Bush/McCain, clease the soul of the earth, and roll back climate change, how many do you think he'd get? (ballpark guess, to a + or - 50 margin of error)

Already had one white guy performing (Bon Jovi).

Can’t let things get too white there. Gotta keep the blacks happy on the liberal plantation, keep ‘em entertained.

Looking down the listed musicians, I mean, you really think Kerry listens to the Black Eyed Peas? Really? Like that is the first thing he wants to pipe through his energy sucking mansion? Really think Gore was smitten with Luther Vandross? I know a lot of black female libs would be. Not Gore-ack.

Yes, Bon Jovi will be there. Obama is only worried about being seen with actual celebrities.

Bada bing!

I also think its the Milwaukee performance.
Tickets still available
Bikes are really starting to roll in now
I’ve seen plates from Tennesse, Michigan, Colorado; although Colorado might be just to get the hell out of Denver
So many bikes, must be the recession, you know, bad economic times
I live around a local dealership (House of Harley)
Five city blocks of street festival, it should be a wild time
I’m sure my husband will be there watching the bikini bike wash

From a crowd of 100,000, he’d get about 230 volunteers, 190 of them women.

Even if he only got half of 1% to go along with it...that’s still 375 people, give or take.

“The decision to exclude pop singers indicates how Republican rival Senator John McCain’s effort to turn Mr Obama’s fame into a weakness has rattled the Democrat’s campaign.”

So in an effort to avoid that weakness he has decided to evoke Greek gods. This move makes him look far more serious. He knows McCain can’t put Paris Hilton in a toga to mock him.

Who cares? When was the last time Springsteen put out anything worth listening too? Instead of picking up where born in the U.S.A. left off, he’s put out one crappy record after another. I’d ban him from my convention too.

“as the Democratic candidate seeks to avoid association with celebrities.”

Another demographic under the bus. It appears that all of the fawning and gushing of the MSM and Hollywood elitists is beginning to backlash. Maybe the media will try to return to journalism and Hollywood will go back to what it knows best-make believe.
