John McCain is poised to announce his vice-presidential running mate, hoping to steal the thunder of his rival Barack Obama, whom Republicans are mocking as an 'emperor' speaking on Thursday night at an 'Obamopolis'.
The Republican candidate was due to appear with his vice-presidential pick at a rally in Dayton, Ohio on Friday morning, his 72nd birthday.
But Republican officials intimated that a name might even be leaked just before Mr Obama accepts the Democratic nomination before some 80,000 people at Denver's Invesco stadium on Thursday.
Senior aides to Mr McCain said that three people were on his shortlist - Governor Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney and Senator Joe Lieberman of Connecticut. But they were not ruling out a "dark horse" choice such as Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas.
Announcing a vice-presidential selection to coincide with Mr Obama's speech would be a break with the tradition of allowing one's opponent a clear run on the night they accept their party's nomination.
Mr Pawlenty and Mr Romney were the favourites to be Mr McCain's running mate. Nervousness about Mr Romney's personal wealth and his fraught relationship with Mr McCain during the Republican primaries meant that some Republicans believed his star was waning.
But at just 47 and a newcomer to the national stage, some strategists viewed Mr Pawlenty as a risk, particularly because he would be up against the vastly-experienced Senator Joe Biden, Mr Obama's running mate, in the vice-presidential debate.
The pro-Romney faction cited the former governor's expertise on the economy - a weak point for Mr McCain. Karl Rove, former adviser to President George W. Bush, sought to intervene to stop Mr McCain choosing Mr Lieberman, an independent former Democrat who is Jewish and favours abortion rights.

I thought the same thing a few days ago when it said he may do it before the speech...it would have to be someone that would make the RATS really shake in their boots. But who?
Kewl!
“...I like Mitt....hes got more energy than Biden, plus he looks good in a suit.”:
And he has his own hair (at least I think it is really his).
well said. im sure a lot of people agree with you
I agree, it would be a bad move, but I think McCain is just messing with the media a little bit. I don’t think he has any intention of releasing the name of the VP tonight.
Maybe McCain camp has leaked the possibility so that reporters start camping out at the homes of the candidates like they did for Obambi’s pick, lets see if that happens. The media is always looking for that scoop. That would create something without McCain actually announcing tonight
LOL!!! If THAT were the pick, IT WOULD STEAL Obambi’s thunder BUT really piss US off...lol
The DNC is scared to death that the crowd may break out with the TOGA!, TOGA!, TOGA! chant.
Man, that would be priceless, because then the producers would have to try to drown that out by potting up the volume on the PA system, or limiting the TV feed to just pick up Obama's mike. I'm certain they have Toga!, Toga!, Toga! contingency plans - which is funny in it's own right.
I think that’ll happen if its either Pawlenty OR Cantor. Upon hearing either name as his VP choice, the average voter is going to say: WHO!? The average voter doesn’t have a clue who either of them are.
That’s not to say I think either is a bad candidate, but neither will generate any immediate excitement among the general public at all.
Will alcoholic beverages be served at this RAT FEST? Anyone know? If so, hehehe we may have a better show than even imagined...I am sure the pot will be smuggled in...oh wait, it is free marijuana week in Denver isn’t it?
What time is Osama’s coronation to take place? I may just record this.
That’s actually a funny idea.
But aren't liberals ALL ABOUT tearing down American tradition? Screw every last one of them, I hope he does announce it tonight - JUST AS osama takes the stage.
