The fact is, had Ramos and Compean been intelligent and done things by the book, Aldrete-Davila would be in prison right now and they would be free.
But they screwed up disastrously and then decided to compound it by lying and tampering with evidence.

They paid a heavy price for being lazy and not wanting to simply write a memo. Although I still think that charging them with possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony (which carried the mandatory 10 year sentence) was underhanded and unethical.
