Denver -- As Bill Clinton and Joe Biden dominated center stage Wednesday night at the Democratic National Convention, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom was presiding over "Unconventional '08," a street party held in an artsy warehouse corner of the city featuring indie bands and a knot of people young enough to be Biden's grandchildren. There, mingling beneath an art gallery facade full of iconic images of Sen. Barack Obama was the evening's host - the former Sen. Hillary Clinton delegate Newsom.
Four years ago, Newsom was a pariah at the 2004 Democratic National Convention. Democrats were angry that he had sanctioned San Francisco to begin allowing same sex marriages, and blamed him for the backlash of anti-gay marriage initiatives across the country. He still sounds hurt talking about how some of his closest political mentors shunned him.
Much has changed this year. Newsom has been everywhere in Denver this week, boosting his national profile with a bottomless list of stop-bys and featured appearances. Within 36 hours, he was being vetted/honored by the Washington media elite, toasted by California's gay and lesbian caucus, and interviewing top Facebook and YouTube officials on his local talk show.
Before he was scheduled to go to his concert to "celebrate generation Obama," he was interviewed by top Newsweek editors and PBS, and stopped by a party thrown by Voto Latino, an organization trying to connect young Latinos through new media. A writer from Elle magazine has been trailing him for a forthcoming profile and the Sept. 1 issue of Time magazine lists Newsom as one of its five "hotshots to watch" Democrats.
''It's a very different convention than it was last time. Four years ago, a lot of folks didn't want me to even to go. Now, I've gotten into the convention center;

Hmmm... This paragraph struck me as awfully interesting. I wonder why they were so angry with Mayor Newsom. I thought they WANTED to sanction gay marriage? I suppose he just didn’t do it along their “timeline” or something - probably couldn’t use it as a campaign tactic to get people riled up anymore or something... Who knows - like I said, that really makes no sense to me!
looks like a morph of Mitt Romney and plasticman
Newsom’s problem isn’t gay marriage, it’s illegal alien criminals running amuck in his city, aided and abetted by his administration.
The surviving family members of the Sunday afternoon shooting that killed the husband and two sons has started the procedures against the city, the mayor, and the district sttorney.
Newsom and Harris won't be laughing in a few weeks.
Aren’t they a perfect match?
Man, things are different in Denver.
Here in SF Newsom couldn’t go to an “avant garde” artsy anything without running into a crowd of leftists who hate his guts. Here, believe it or not, he is a conservative. And he is, outside of the necessary kowtowing to the powers that be and the bit of gay-grandstanding. And he wins elections here by 70%+ vs the local alternative.
And that lady beside him, Kamala Harris ? She is the heir apparent. She is a hopeless ditz. The alternatives are a horde of nuts, weirdos, and wanna-be Hugo Chavezes. There just isn’t anyone actually sane who wants to run for office here, even though most of the people would be happy to vote for the lone sane candidate.
Lets put it this way - if Newsom is Louis XV, she is Louis XVI, and after Newsom leaves, we here in SF are going to be in serious trouble. If Newsom speaks French (I don’t think so) he could indeed say “apres moi le deluge”.
He doesn’t have a problem.
Given the local political situation he could be elected unopposed for life if there were no term limits. He is the last sane politician in SF. Only crazy people want that job now.
The fact that in his city, the homeless have more rights than the citizens, destroys much of any credibility he has. SF reminds me of paris, in that its a city that is living off its past achievements and history. Its now nothing but a bunch of tourist traps and landmarks built by a privious generation that are in decay. Homeless people have more rights than the working class. Last time I was in SF near union square, I saw homeless people taking dumps on the city sidewalks in broad daylight.
....”If Newsom speaks French (I dont think so)”....
Perhaps greek?
Ahhh... That makes total sense! I thought it was probably something along those lines, but couldn’t find the words to express it! Thanks. :)
Yep, we’ve got that problem in a lot of places - sanctuary cities and all. Used to live in Denver so I’m well aware of how that affects a community - bad stuff!
Ditto. I've seen them dropping pants, squatting over the curb on Market Street near City Hall and taking dumps as Muni buses drive by full of tourists. Gross. And Newsom loves these homeless turds.
Much like the LA Mayor Villa the Grossa.
Any twosome will do some for Newsom...
You know, I look at Gavin and I think of Christian Bale as Pat Bateman in “American Psycho”.
