I was planning on voting for Barr. But now I’m gonna vote McCain. The problem is that I live in IL, so my vote doesn’t count (or, more accurately for Chicago politics, won’t be counted, unless it is for a “D”).

Dont fall for that Red State Blue State stuff. Look back at the Reagan politcal maps. This could very much be setting itself up for another Reagan like landslide. I am in the same boat you are living in Washington, and I can tell you I am more exited than ever to get involved.
