Sarah Palin: The Double-X Dan Quayle
RCP ^ | August 29, 2008, 12:22 PM | Dee Dee Myers

“Not again!” I thought to myself this morning, as news trickled out that John McCain was set to pick Alaska governor Sarah Palin as his running mate. Not again, because too often women are promoted for the wrong reasons, and then blamed when things don’t go right.

Don’t get me wrong: what I know of Palin (which admittedly isn’t much), I kind of like. I don’t agree with her politics. But in her two years in Alaska’s state house, she’s shown herself to be a scrappy reformer, a no-nonsense manager, and a consistent conservative. She’s also a mother of five, which in my book is a sterling test of leadership.

It’s such a transparently political decision, a double-X Dan Quayle. McCain made the decision to double down on his credentials as a take-no-prisoners reformer. But he did so at the expense of the more important qualifications for a running mate.

It’s not political to say that John McCain turns 72 today. That he’s a cancer survivor. That he spent six years being tortured and abused in a Vietnamese prison camp. Those are the physical realities of his life, and pure and simple, they demanded that he chose a running mate who is ready, really ready. That he put country first. Today, he failed that test.

Worse, when Sarah Palin falls short—and I hope I’m wrong but I think in important ways, such as her debate with Joe Biden, she will—some people will conclude that women can’t cut it. That’s unfair to Sarah Palin—and it’s certainly unfair to the rest of us.

This will probably be one of the more...polite descriptions directed towards her in the coming weeks.

16 years in public life, and a record of going after the big boys and winning.

She has a record that puts Obama to shame.

Sarah has been a commercial fisherman. She's hunted moose (not the one who bit anyone's sister). I think she can handle Joe "The Plug" Biden in a debate.

Again, I am struck by the fact that the RATs are running an totally inexperienced man at the top of the ticket and tell us he is the second coming.

At the same time, they also tell us that they feel a woman (with the same or perhaps even more experience) is a huge risk.

Says an awful lot about their true beliefs regarding women, doesn't it?

What an arrogant and presumptuous remark by a person whose crowning achievement in life appears to have been being an apologist for Bill Clinton! Some would say that she's already set the standard for women who "can't cut it."

Quayle must be the talking point given to the Libs and Lib media. A Liberal Koskid I know at work e-mailed me this question, “Is Quayle her middle name?”

I replied; No, but I'm sure she has shot a few, along with some bigger game - attaching a picture of Sarah next to a Bull Elk she had just downed, rifle in hand. He had no response.

When Dee Dee says that McCain should have “put the country first” what she means is that he ought to have chosen someone who would ensure Obama’s victory.

You should see the liberal meltdown in my office today. They’re all joking that Palin is unqualified, but I can see it in their faces. It’s unmistakable:

Fear.

We WON with Dan Quale... the first time.

These libs are soooo angry!

It’s a mystery why.

Palin is more qualified than Obama. As a governor, Palin runs everything. Obama is a Senator of Illinois which is just a Representative and all he does is vote on things that other people have put together.

That’s the bottom line. They are fit to be tied because McCain made such a good chess move. This gives me confidence in his ability to deal with other things too, for instance, the Russians.

Sarah Palin is AT LEAST as qualified (I would say more so) to be VP as osamaobama is to be Pres. So for kicks and giggles I would suggest to Dee Dee-that we substitute the idea of running “someone of color” vs. McCain in your article and see how it sounds.
It would go something like this (her last paragraph)

“Worse, when barack obama falls short—and I hope I’m wrong but I think in important ways, such as his debate with John McCain, he will—some people will conclude that blacks can’t cut it. That’s unfair to barack obama—and it’s certainly unfair to the rest of us(read:blacks)”.

There Dee Dee-how’s that work?

Since all the libs are in instant attack mode Sarah Palin really must be making their heads explode.

Having heard Palin speak in person I can’t wait until she debates with Biden. She will slice and dice him. Biden will try to intimidate her, but, he’ll be smacked so hard his ancestor’s asses will turn red. Barracuda on the basketball court, she’ll be a wolverine in the political arena.
