John McCains announcement that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin would be his running mate caught the country off-guard and perhaps surprised no one more than the news media.
Now that McCains selection has sunk in for a few days, the press is starting to make some judgments.
I do think that the choice of Sarah Palin was a real Hail Mary pass, said Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan, echoing language used Friday by New York Sen. Charles Schumer. Theyre called Hail Mary passes because usually they dont work. But when you see one and it does work it is a thing of beauty.
The former Reagan speechwriter had some advice for Palins Democratic adversaries: Try to define Palin as soon as possible, before the public gets to know her.
Theyve got to be thinking, we gotta kill it and we gotta kill it quick, she said.

Noonan offered her comments at a breakfast panel in St. Paul, Minn., hosted by Politico, Yahoo News and the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Sharing the stage with her were Tucker Carlson of MSNBC; Arianna Huffington, the founder of the Huffington Post; Rick Klein, the author of ABC News The Note; and Time magazines Mark Halperin.
its just an indication of how secretive mccain administration will be. How dare he don’t tell us, the media. Ppl (media) have the right to know!
“Surprised” is too mild. Try “horrified.”
Special ping!
They were hoping for Joe Lieberman or Tom Ridge.
I’d have to lose my reason to believe that the media wants to help the Republicans.

I already have - just reading what they’ve been saying about Sarah Palin these past few days and now they’re attacking her daughter. CREEPS!!!!!
This is the dig against Palin we must be sure to talk about with friends and neighbors. Being a governor has always be thought to be the BEST training to be president. It was good enough for Carter, Reagan, Clinton, and George W Bush.
It's not good enough for Palin because she is (wink, wink) a woman. Don't let this leftist sexism go unchallenged.

Huffington, Huffington, the dizzy thing confusing herself with Zsa Zsa Gabor who chose a homosexual as her running mate.
I would that Sarah Palin could prevail upon John McCain vis-a-vis his delusion of human agency in the imaginary "global warming".
Has anyone begun a Senate investigation into the missing sunspots?
Sarah Palin is the new atomic clock for political sanity.
