Dr. Laura's Blog: Sarah Palin and Motherhood

Sarah Palin and Motherhood September 2, 2008 on 1:35 pm | In Children, Election, Sarah Palin, Working Women Email This Post Email This Post

I am extremely disappointed in the choice of Sarah Palin as the Vice Presidential candidate of the Republican Party. I will still vote for Senator McCain, because I am very concerned about having a fundamental leftist, especially one who is a marvelous orator, as President.

......

I’m stunned - couldn’t the Republican Party find one competent female with adult children to run for Vice President with McCain? I realize his advisors probably didn’t want a “mature” woman, as the Democrats keep harping on his age. But really, what kind of role model is a woman whose fifth child was recently born with a serious issue, Down Syndrome, and then goes back to the job of Governor within days of the birth?

I am haunted by the family pictures of the Palins during political photo-ops, showing the eldest daughter, now pregnant with her own child, cuddling the family’s newborn. When Mom and Dad both work full-time (no matter how many folks get involved with the children), it becomes a somewhat chaotic situation. Certainly, if a child becomes ill and is rushed to the hospital, and you’re on the hotline with both Israel and Iran as nuclear tempers are flaring, where’s your attention going to be? Where should your attention be? Well, once you put your hand on the Bible and make that oath, your attention has to be with the government of the United States of America.

I heard Dr. Laura read this blog on-air before she posted it. Wasn’t too happy with what she said, although I have had some of the same concerns.

As for Bristol cuddling her little brother, so what? I’m fourteen years older than my brother and I did lots of cuddling. Girls/women just DO that...Dr. Laura should know if she’s such a great counselor.

Dr. Laura also needs to look into Jewish history, heck look at world history, to see that the “women at home with kids” is a rather recent development. Hasn’t she ever read Proverbs 31?

How the Palins decide to raise their family is up to Todd & Sarah. As long as its a family decision and the family is supportive and accepting of the issues that go along with the position, they will get through it. That’s why they call it “service” and “sacrifice”. Let’s not forget that there are countless mommies and daddies going to Iraq to serve this country. Is Dr. Laura going to chastise them as well?

I heard this on Dr. Laura's radio show. However, there is a little known fact about Todd Palin’s job. My husband works in the Alaska oil fields, usually those men work 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off. So essentially, he works half the year. Don't get me wrong, they make damn good money for a part time job but they do get a lot of time off.

Also, there are a lot of days in Alaska that are dark. Alaska has a unique culture than us in “America” (which is what people in Alaska call the lower 48)

Wow, you know what is missing from this, John Nance Garner the VEEP during FDR’s first two terms described the VP job as, “not worth a bucket of warm piss.” [Often misquote in what Garner called a “pantywaist” manner with the last word replaced is spit.]

Seriously, as VEEP Palin would have less day to day responsibilities than she does now as Governor of Alaska. What a bogus argument. In fact Palin’s question about responsibilites of the VP when read in full context is that she did not want to give up a job which keeps her active for one that is mainly cerimonial.

I’m not sure Dr. Laura is aware that Todd Palin is a stay-at-home dad.

I’ve read Dr. Laura’s books and she is anti-day care (and with good reason; there is much that is wrong with full-time day care for children under 5) but I don’t think she really has too much of a problem with stay-at-home dad care or grandparent care.

In a generic sense, maybe she has some points, BUT she is NOT looking at the specifics of the Palin family.

First, two of her children will NOT be in the home.

Second, most likely Mr. Palin will take a more active role sense there is not a lot of snow machine riding and pipelines in D.C.

Third, the special needs child will need "hired help" no matter if Sarah stays at home or is called to be POTUS.

While working at USC, she met Dr. Lewis G. Bishop, who was married but separated with dependent children. According to divorce filings, Schlessinger and Bishop began an affair. Bishop left his wife after more than 20 years of marriage, and moved in with Schlessinger. They lived together as an unmarried couple, and Schlessinger tried to get pregnant after reversing an earlier tubal ligation and suffering an ectopic pregnancy. They married in early 1985, eight years after beginning their relationship, and Bishop became Schlessinger’s business manager. Schlessinger bore their only child, Deryk Schlessinger, in November 1985, when she was 38.

Schlessinger began practicing Judaism in 1996, and she and her son Deryk became followers of Conservative Judaism. Although Schlessinger’s father was Jewish, she was not a Jew under Jewish law, which dictates that the children are the ethnicity of the mother only. In 1998, Schlessinger, Bishop, and their son converted to Judaism and began learning to practice Orthodox Judaism under Rabbi Reuven P. Bulka of Ottawa, Ontario. Schlessinger sometimes used Jewish law and examples to resolve the moral dilemmas of her callers, whether or not they were Jewish. She occasionally clarified ethical and moral issues with her local Orthodox Rabbi, Moshe D. Bryski, before mentioning them on the air. She was embraced by many in the politically conservative segment of Orthodox Judaism for bringing more awareness of Orthodoxy to her radio show. Schlessinger received a National Heritage award from the National Council of Young Israel in early 2001. Some of her expressed views were explicitly religious, and found their way into her 1999 book The Ten Commandments: The Significance of God’s Laws in Everyday Life. While her other books stressed the importance of morality, they were secular in nature.

She has received awards from both media and conservative organizations, including the Marconi Award for Network/Syndicated Personality of the year, American Women in Radio & Television’s Genii Award and National Heritage Award, and the National Religious Broadcasters’ Chairman’s Award. She also lectures on the national conservative circuit, and was the commencement speaker at Hillsdale College in June, 2002. Her son matriculated there the following fall; he subsequently left college and joined the United States Army under its 18x Special Forces contract program.

In July 2003, Schlessinger announced on her show that she was no longer an Orthodox Jew. In a series of monologues over the next month, she explained that she did not feel a connection with God, and felt frustrated by the effort she had put into following the religion. Her religious approach on the show lessened substantially after this announcement. She emphasized on the air how her Christian callers always reached out to her as a respected and valued friend, unlike her Jewish contacts, who were inclined to be indifferent.

I like Dr. Laura, but I love Sarah Palin. This is one time (perhaps the one and only time) when Laura probably should have kept her social conservative mouth shout.

And let’s face it, doesn’t the family of a Vice President or President always make some sacrifices? When she becomes Vice-President, her husband can quit his job and stay home with the kids. She may even become President some day.

I’m a disappointed with Laura, but I understand that she is doing her thing. She emphasizes traditional family morality. It’s a good thing she does. I think the rest of us should realize that is her shtick, and ignore her in the case. No grudges, just benign neglect.

LOL. I knew Dr. Laura's opinion would be thus--how could it be otherwise, given what she's been saying for the past umpteen years?

What do you want to bet she will now become a momentary media fave again?

The fact of the matter is, there are times when commitment to country trumps even commitment to family. Like during a time of war.

I consider Sarah Palin to be an extraordinarily talented woman who has arrived on the scene at the exact right moment. For her to turn away from this moment would have been to deny her an opportunity to change history for the better.

Frankly, I wouldn't blame her or admire her any less if she had turned down the offer citing family reasons. But I'm thankful she didn't.

America needs her right now.
