Here's my reply to Dr. Laura:

Dear Laura,

I've been a huge fan of yours for years. My wife has several of your books and I have always appreciated your opinion.

I knew you'd be coming out with a statement like this about Sarah Palin and to be honest, I can't blame you. Her nomination flies in the face of much of what you've been counseling for years. For you to say anything else would be hypocritical.

That said, I think you need to reassess this situation. This is not a case of a married woman working as a secretary and putting her kid in daycare. This is an unbelievably talented woman whom has been given an unheardof opportunity to change an election and thereby change America and indeed change history.

You lament that McCain couldn't find another woman to run with him. Well, having heard some of the possibilities (Kay Baily Hutchinson, Carly Fiorina), the common thread for them was a shaky position on abortion. For me, as a social conservative, either of those women would have been a supremely disappointing pick. Sarah Palin, by contrast, is an inspired pick.

For those of us who care about the fate of the unborn who are slaughtered in their millions each year, an Obama presidency is unthinkable. Obama would put a liberal lock on the Court that would take generations to undo. The time to flip the Supreme Court on this issue is NOW. And I believe that by picking Sarah Palin, John McCain has made what was a fading hope to end judicial tyranny over abortion into a real possibility.

The fact of the matter is, there are times when commitment to country trumps even commitment to family. Like during a time of war, for instance.

I consider Sarah Palin to be an extraordinarily talented woman who has arrived on the scene at the exact right moment. For her to turn away from this moment would have been to deny her an opportunity to change our country for the better.

Frankly, I wouldn't blame her or admire her any less if she had turned down the offer citing family reasons. But I'm thankful she didn't.

America needs her right now.

Finally, as a long time fan, I will say this to you--if you take this bashing of Sarah Palin to the major media and carry their water for them to enhance your own career, I will never forgive you. Nor will I ever defend you again against unfair attacks for you will have shown yourself to be everything your critics said you were.

May God watch over and bless you,

etc.

That is an excellent letter and sums up my feelings exactly. (You can add something in it about how Todd Palin cut back on his hours already when she was a governor, and will likely not work at all while in DC. I think that is something she overlooked and needs to address publicly.)
