My dad was badly wounded in the first world war...after he came home from the front lines it was several years before he could even stand up.
But he tried everything he could think of to earn a living again...even to selling shoelaces, shoe polish and matches in the streets of Wolverhampton.
One day in a fit of despair, he took all his medals and tossed them in the waste bin...then he went and joined the communist party.
I was just a six year old kid, but it hurt me to see a brave man crying! I never forgot the sight of my mom trying to comfort him!
If I remember correctly, Woking is the town that was invaded by aliens in “War of the Worlds”. It is also the home of McLaren Racing. Once played a wonderful golf course there called Worplesdon. I’m sure this news won’t go over well with the citizens there.

It was unbeleivable what happened to England from the 1880s on through the 1960s. A gutting of a country and a demise of the middle class.
The aristocracy gutted at one and ultimately the social welfare state has gutted at the other end. I have been reading the Miss Read books for years and can see how even the prosperous of the middle class led relatively marginal lives. There was no work was there?
I love Kipling. Why, I’d rather kipple than just about anything.
(Hi, Kenny!)
