Holy Squish! Lieberman Goes Soft (would give gays, lesbians, federal civil rights protection)

Veep Pick Hailed for Orthodox Morals; Ignored By Networks When He Becomes Farrakhan-Praising Pol

Will the networks take the opportunity on the occasion of Louis Farrakhan’s "Million Family March" to explore vice presidential nominee Joe Lieberman’s declaration that he "respects" and would meet with Farrakhan, who’s called Judaism a "gutter religion"?

Nearly every Lieberman conflict with Jewish groups and religious figures has been ignored.

August 7: Lieberman’s first problem with fellow Jews came on CNN’s Larry King Live. King asked: "Wouldn't most Orthodox Jews be pro-life?" Lieberman dodged: "And like everything else in Judaism, ultimately, it's up to each of us to decide what we think is right." Network coverage? Zero.

August 29: The Anti-Defamation League criticized Lieberman for mixing religion with politics. Network coverage? All the networks covered this. CBS made the complaint its lead story, as Phil Jones turned to the ‘conservative Bill Bennett’ to vouch for Lieberman.

September 15: Lieberman drew heavy fire from traditionalist Jews for an appearance on the Imus in the Morning radio show, simulcast on MSNBC. When Imus asked if there’s a ban on "interracial or interreligious marriage," Lieberman said "No. There is no ban whatsoever. Certainly not on interracial. And not on interreligious." Dr. Mandrell Ganchrow, president of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America (Lieberman’s on the group’s Board of Directors) was flabbergasted, telling the Jerusalem Post: "Given that intermarriage is probably the number one problem affecting the Jews today, I don’t know what went through Lieberman’s mind when he said that." He said interviewers "should stop asking him about it, and he should stop talking about it." Network coverage? Zero.

October 7: Despite the protests of rabbinical groups about attending a gay-agenda fundraiser on the eve of Yom Kippur, Lieberman spoke at the annual Human Rights Campaign fundraising dinner. AP reported Lieberman "promised that a Gore administration would give gay men and lesbians federal civil rights protections for the first time." Network coverage? Zero.

While all the networks have ignored the Lieberman-Farrakhan controversy, NBC’s Tim Russert put Farrakhan on Meet the Press. Russert asked, "Could you not help unify the country if you stood up tomorrow at the Million Family March and say, ‘I regret suggesting that Jews control blacks and control black athletes and control black sports figures and black politicians’?" Farrakhan said: "I cannot, Mr. Russert."

The networks should ask: can Lieberman "respect" that?

Does McCain want this kind of thinking in his admin?

Liz,

Why are you digging this old news up for? Thank Joe for standing up for Bush, McCain, and the WOT.

Did you forget who McCain made his VP mate? I think she gave a speech somewhere last night. From what I hear, it wasn't half bad.

McCain said he would have a PRO-LIFE Presidency with PRO-LIFE policies. Period. End of discussion. His selection of Palin shows he's keeping his word.

Now if he wants to put Joe in as SOS or SOD and will have nothing to do with abortion politics, I have no problem with that.

Hey, maybe if you keep digging, you can find something from 20 or 30 years ago!

Look.

Politics is war.

And in politics, as in war, the enemy of my enemy is my friend, even if only for one night.

On the issue of Iraq, the leftist overrun Dims threw Lieberman under the bus, because he wouldn’t dance their tune; he wouldn’t seek our defeat, as they were doing. From that, and for that, if even for that alone, he won their eternal enmity and our praise for his courage.

Disagree all you want with Lieberman, on any issue, as McCain has, and will continue to do on many issues - respectfully.

But, if you want to hate Leiberman sooo much that you cannot see the benefit (”moderate” liberal and independent voters in the general election, who share Lieberman’s national security views) to him speaking at the RNC, and are, wrongly, afraid it (the relationship) is more meaningful than that, then go ahead and make yourself miserable.

Going soft? Or perhaps had a small stroke. or a few shots? I thought Lieberman slurred his words rather more than usual during his GOP Convention speech. Anyone else notice that?

A conservative is a conservative and a liberal is a liberal, including John McCain, of course.

Yeah, that was obvious.

As a staunch Dimocrat, LIEberman was no doubt unnerved, having to be so close to all those "horrid" Republicans.

Get used to it. Right now, the GOP looks like it will lose senate seats in NM, CO, VA, NH, and possibly MN and MS (the last is the least likely to go Dem). Landrieu is way ahead in LA. That's a net loss of 5, bringing the Dems to 54, plus Joe.

Collins and Smith are two of the few Republicans who look like they will survive. Throw in Lindsey Graham and all of a sudden you're within two "mavericks" of a 60-vote filibuster proof majority.

One thing that WILL HAPPEN, no matter who wins the presidency, is that Lieberman, Collins, Smith, and a couple of other RINOs will become the most important power brokers in the U.S. government.

Lieberman must be a very interesting, influencial force among some. There were primary ‘Republican’ candidates that actually donated to his campaign before they ran.

I think I will look into him a bit more.

Nope.
[Palin’s first veto was used to block legislation that would have barred the state from granting benefits to gay state employees and their partners. In effect, her veto granted State of Alaska benefits to same-sex couples.]
Palin has some explaining to do.

Regardless, I'll be voting against Obama - not for McWeevil.   WcWeevil is the lesser evil... but not by much.

McCain choosing Palin for his running mate was in no way a peace offering to conservatives. It was his own selfish grasping at winning the election.

McCain can’t be trusted. McCain hates women. I pray that Todd doesn’t have to knock him on his butt anytime soon. Well, maybe I would welcome that.

Palin is the only good thing in this election. What literally makes me sick to my stomach is voting for her means a backended show of support for McCain. That means giving him support for what he did to our POWs.

Palin for the base has put the RINOs on the back burner.

Look at the RINOpalooza yesterday.

Mel Martinez = amnesty

Graham = amnesty

all the other snoozers who are RINOs

HOWEVER, just as we are pushing back on the MSM, we can push out the RINOS.

RINOS have no compass, they are squishy and willing to sell out for a victory. Conservatives mean victory.

I'd rather vote for a conservative, than a populist.

Last time I checked, giving homosexuals the benefits of marriage wasn't on the conservative agenda; so Palin needs to explain why she gave homosexuals in Alaska those benefits.   Maybe there's more to the story - that's why I'd like an explanation.
