the obama campaign could declare that Biden has some kind of illness, only recently discovered, that must be treated and wouldn’t allow him to campaign effectively.

Estoppel is indeed a legal term that can mean slightly different things in different legal contexts. More or less, it means that someone is prevented from changing their position on a particular issue when it would be unjust to let them do so, usually because some other person took some action in reliance on that position. In short, Biden’s saying “just because we were afraid to try to impeach, nothing’s stopping us from trying to get up the nerve to go after Bush once he’s gone.”

This works so well on so many levels:

1. They look like moonbats willing to do something that no party ever had the audacity or idiocy to try in the past (prosecuting a former President for the conduct of foreign policy).

2. They look like complete and total cowards and hypocrites (Bush’s actions weren’t bad enough to impeach him for while in office, but they’re bad enough to prosecute him for when safely out of office?).

3. They underscore that they are wafflers and panderers when they backtrack.

4. They remind everyone that they are “clever” lawyers.

In baseball terms, Biden should get the Golden Sombrero for this one.
