The answer is he picked Sarah Palin.
If Palin campaigns well through the next two months, and impresses in her debate with Biden, she will be the GOP front-runner in either 2012 or 2016 - a young, fresh leader for the GOP and for the conservative movement. For that alone, McCain deserves gratitude from all conservatives.
