BERKELEY - Crews began cutting down trees next to Memorial Stadium at UC Berkeley late Friday, 21 months after activists climbed into the trees to protest the university's plan to raze them to build a $140 million sports training center center.
Work crews with chainsaws and bulldozers arrived at the university grove Friday and by 4 p.m. six trees had been chopped down.
Clad in black ski masks, the four remaining tree protesters who were driven into a single redwood several months ago, remained in the tree Friday and at times sparred with arborists, tossing a bottle and branches toward the crews.
Arborists trimmed most of the branches from the redwood, leaving the few tarps and wooden platforms and the tree sitters alone before moving on to other trees on the south side of the grove.

This is reminiscent of the YouTube video that someone posted earlier today with the group who was crying and wailing about trees. Some thought is was a spoof. It was not.
Somehow the building of a $140 MILLION sports training center makes we root for the trees.
Univ of Texas MOVED the uprooted trees and TOOK AWAY student parking to replant them.
They need to come out to my place and spend a couple of days clearing honey locust and hedge sprouts out of the pastures and road right of way. They will find out in a hurry that the world is not going to run out of trees.
Why do places put up with tree sitters trespassing on their property? Just mace and tear gas them out. Should take 10 minutes tops.

UC Berkley created the idiots, let them deal with them.
Build around them. Say a reinforced concrete structure 1o feet from the tree, to above the top. Then drop several large tanks of Carbon dioxide, with the valves smashed open, down the structure.
Wait 30 minutes, then dynamite.
I'm with you actually on this. Why does a bunch of pampered chickensh*t Colleyfornian suburbanites need a 140 million dollars' worth of handball courts?
