Sarah Palin's Surge ( "the future of the Republican Party" )
Wall Street Journal ^ | September 5, 2008 | staff

By now nearly everyone in America knows that Sarah Palin described herself at the GOP convention Wednesday night as "just your average hockey mom." She isn't average anymore, though she can still throw a hip check. After a national political debut that ranks with Barack Obama's in 2004 and Ronald Reagan's in 1964, the Alaska Governor may be the future of the Republican Party.

With his nomination last night, John McCain is now the leader of the GOP (see here). But win or lose in November, Senator McCain has elevated Mrs. Palin to new prominence and jumbled Republican categories in a healthy way. The reaction at St. Paul's Xcel Center—and the fascination around the country—shows how welcome this is.

For the past several years, the GOP has been caught in the malaise of what we have often called the Beltway status quo. As insurgents challenging Washington mores in the 1980s and 1990s, Republicans were the party of ideas and energy. But over time, as the Bush Presidency ran into trouble and the Tom DeLay Congress began to care most about its own re-election, the party lost its verve, even its raison d'etre.

On Wednesday, Governor Palin offered a new populist excitement, both as a messenger and in her message. By "messenger," we aren't merely referring to her gender, though that seems to be the preoccupation of the media. Her relative youth (44) and large family—complete with its many complications—were themselves a cultural statement. Though many in the media claim she was chosen because she appealed to the Christian right, Mrs. Palin never even raised the subject of abortion. She didn't have to, since her youngest son, the one with special needs, is proof enough of her pro-life conviction.

Good; we’ve not had a true Conservative as the head of the GOP since 1988.

I’ve heard DemoRATS in the last few days state that they are voting McCain/Palin. The love affair with Osama Obama, the Muslim Messiah, is fading fast. I can’t wait until the gloves come off and the GOP exposes his and his shrew’s anti-American, anti-white, anti-Semitic, anti-military views. The drive by media’s gutter tactics against Sarah and her family will seal their fate, IMO.

The GOP has to monitor and stop voter fraud on the part of the RATS. They’re digging bodies by the thousands as I write this. I’m sure there will be more dead voting for Osama than ever in the history of this country.

GREAT POINT!! VOTER FRAUD is RAMPANT....Bush did nothing to the RATS for this....ACORN is a CRIMINAL ENTERPRISE and should prosecuted under RICO!!

There is a fund for McCain/Palin for attorneys to STOP VOTE FRAUD......Hugh Hewitt probably has the link.

Actions louder than words. That little guy is so obviously loved. There is no better testimony.

A new energy source (in every sense of the word) just got injected into the almost moribund Republican party, which was supposed to march to certain defeat in this fall’s elections. This was by no means a death blow to the Democrats for this year, but it certainly revived hopes that the playing fields would be somewhat leveled, and the land mines would be clearly marked this time.

For the moment, John McCain “gets it”. This is just about the most inspired selection he could have come up with, a virtual unknown for whom the Democrats were caught flat-footed with ZERO opposition research in their dossiers.

Not that they are not trying to make up for lost time.

We need to keep pounding this issue on FR. Any Freepers that are high up in the GOP need to bring this issue up every day. IMO, the GOP needs a team of investigators that monitor this on the day of the election. There needs to be a national telephone number to report voter fraud. They need a national TV ad asking Americans to report voter fraud and give the telephone number and the party needs ensure that it is prosecuted. RATS were helping dementia patients in nursing homes fill out their ballots. The dead will be voting in mass this year and illegals will be driven to the polls by the truck loads, IMO.

The liberal establishment in this country which includes the Dem Party, the media, and the education complex, is very afraid of Palin. Not only because she can bring a chunk of the woman electorate, but because she represents a break from the establishment itself.

The liberal establishment has made great inroads into the GOP by inducing them to think they could also buy votes by spending mass amounts of money.

But Palin, represents real America. She frightens them much more than a good slick Republican willing to fight on the agenda set up by the liberal establishment in the media.

Palin has the potential to be Reaganesque...deep-rooted into real America. A force they cannot compete with and cannot destroy. She is Revolutionary in thier eyes and they fear her more than they will let you know.

Look at how they demonized Reagan during and after his Presidency. Look at how people came out to adore and pay respect to him. They not only fear Palin, they will absolutely try to destroy her...and her family be damned. As Andrea Mitchell told you, “the war is on”.

Isn’t it a crying shame that Republicans became so sissified and cowardly that we had to reach out to a female moosehunter from Alaska to rescue us?

> Not that they are not trying to make up for lost time.

Yes, but in their haste, they crossed boundaries that alienated even more people from their cause.

McCain just can’t be that brilliant.

I sense the hand of the Lord in this.

Here in Alaska, Palin took the Repub Party outta Big Oil's pocket and started it down the road to being accountable to the people. You wouldn't believe how our Repub Party tried to set her up & destroy Palin 6-7 years ago. She didn't burn her bridges to the repubs, she bided her time and went after them and won, because she gained the support/trust of the people. Today in Alaska, many of the repubs & dems have joined forces to stifle Palin at every turn; as they still would prefer to ignore the people. Bottomline is the people trust Sarah Palin over any political of any party, she wins. There really is a reason why she's at 80%.

I'd luv to see this occur on a national scale in Washington. Palin will be our first woman pres, change the Repub Party for the better, and ensure many years of Republican Leadership.

ONe thing for sure, the entire Congress will attempt to destroy her all over again. Great to see the support she is receiving, she will need even more down the road.
