An adviser molds a tighter, more aggressive McCain campaign By Jim Rutenberg and Adam Nagourney Sunday, September 7, 2008
ST. PAUL: It was what aides to Senator John McCain describe as probably the worst night of his campaign. As Senator Barack Obama claimed the Democratic nomination before a cheering sea of faces on national television, McCain countered with a lackluster speech in a half-empty hall, posed in front of a pea-green screen that became fodder for late-night comedy.
Steve Schmidt, a senior adviser to McCain who worked on President George W. Bush's campaign in 2004, could barely hide his fury in the coming days, as he announced to anyone who would listen that he would personally make certain the McCain campaign would never again embarrass McCain.
"Fun Steve is dead," Schmidt said.

Aw, too bad.
To use a cliche... he's quite refreshing... to not roll over and play dead like a lot of previous GOP candidates would do.
Good. Go Sarah Go!
Schmidt is AWESOME! they say he is a terror with staff..ha. But his staff loves him, he really pushes them.
Of course, myself being a Type A workaholic I love this guy. ha.
Yep. I hope they keep the limp-wristed “go along to get along” advisers away. Fighting Obama isn’t a senate campaign, pledging to work with the opposition like a good RINO should.
I think, if it were up to McCain, he wouldn’t be fighting. The GOP is running the “fighting” angle of this election.
We ... the party have a lot to lose if we are not in the Whitehouse. And the GOP is putting money, resources and strategy into winning.
If they want to win the election, there’s no place for coddling delicate feelings ... not the staff’s feelings, and certainly not the opponent’s feelings.
When people are part of a winning team, the hardships and aggressive personalities are worth it.
Yup. Yup.
The thrust of this article seems to be that Schmidt is effective because he’s a liar and a trouble maker who is making McLame behave badly.
I still don’t like McCain but I tip my hat to his handlers, they are doing a great job.
Ditto that.
Actually a good read.
I said sarcastically for months, “I wonder when McCain is going to begin campaigning?”
Then BOOM! suddenly he has this taut, focused, dynamic, discilined campaign.
I dearly hope it remains so. I’ll never, NEVER understand why W learned nothing from the maddeningly effective campaign-approach of The Nameless One. Seems like this gent did. I hope he sticks with it.
The article tries to make schmidt out to be a bad guy — IR they are trying to ROVE him.
In reality, Steve Schmidt is the reincarnation of Lee Atwater, and he could not have come along at a better time.
BobRemember early on he kept disavowing anyone who “went too far” (which meant they said something negative about Obama). It was like-Bob Dole time! We knew he’d eventually would have to fight, but he’s doing it smart...not like Dole who came out with “He’s a real Bozo!” Yeah Bob, Chinagate, clean coal, Riady, but you say nothing till the end and then all we got was “Bozo”...Hope your handlers are retired Bob.
IIRC much of this McCain change is due to someone being added to the crew but I forgot his name.
Bobremember? LOL, wish we had an edit. It should read just “remember”
We’re in a war since last Saturday, and we now have the right GENERAL to fiercely fight this was aggressively (more so than Bush’s campaign IMHO).
We are at war with treasonous vermin in the drive-by media and their Liberal cohorts everywhere. The enemy was spawned in the gutter and resides there. Our future and freedom are at stake, therefore, we must climb in the gutter and beat them at their own game using their tactics back on them. Our troops are putting their lives on the line to protect and defend this great nation. We can do no less here at home!
We must ensure that voter fraud gets reported and is prosecuted. You can be sure the RATS are digging in grave yards all over this country. The dead will be voting in mass come November.
Me thinks J McCain wants to be President real bad. I just wish he would go ahead and make some Revum Wright ads. That will be the stake in the heart of Hussein Osama.
