The McCain-Palin jukebox options are shrinking.
The latest rockers to tell the Republicans to cease spinning their albums are the women from Heart, who were chagrined to hear their song "Barracuda" play at the Republican convention as Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin hit the stage. Palin, a star high school basketball point guard, was nicknamed "Sarah Barracuda." The official Heart website states
that "Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart have informed the McCain/Palin Campaign that Universal Music Publishing and Sony BMG have sent a cease-and-desist notice to not use one of Heart's classic songs 'Barracuda,' as the congratulatory theme for Sarah Palin. The Republican campaign did not ask for permission to use the song, nor would they have been granted that permission. We have asked the Republican campaign not to use our music. We hope our wishes will be honored."
And on Entertainment Weekly's website
the Wilson sisters add that "Sarah Palin's views and values in NO WAY represent us as American women. We ask that our song 'Barracuda' no longer be used to promote her image. The song 'Barracuda' was written in the late '70s as a scathing rant against the soulless, corporate nature of the music business, particularly for women. (The 'barracuda' represented the business.) While Heart did not and would not authorize the use of their song at the RNC, there's irony in Republican strategists' choice to make use of it there."
This is not the first time a liberal rock star has asked McCain to stop spinning his or her tunes.

I thought the the usage of copyrighted music was handled by organizations like ASCAP, and that anyone who paid the appropriate royalty could use the music.
I also heard a radio DJ who should have known say that “fair use” allows anyone to use 22 seconds of a song without paying any royalty. (I don’t agree with that sort of “fair use” which requires no royalty, if that’s how is it).
Does anyone really know how this works legally?

The song “Barracuda” is on Guitar Hero 3. I played it last night while watching Sarah Palin on Youtube!

That is not the only time. I believe during the last Democrap Convention they played one of Elvis Presley songs. Elvis is a registered Republican. No one made a hissy fit over that, sheesh.
Where did you hear that?! The music is owned by whoever owns the license. People can purchase permission from the license owner to use the music for specific events or license a large catalog of music for various uses, such as a TV station playing popular music as a bumper. Truthfully, if Ann and Nancy no longer own the license to their lyrics, they really have no say in who plays it, if that party paid the license fee to ASCAP or whomever owns the music.

As aformer radio DJ I can tell you that a radio station can get fined BIG TIME for using snipits of a song in a commercial without permission.
I thought that you could play a song all you want as long as you paid the pre-determined royalty fee to the individual/entity that owns the rights to the song.How is it that Rush can use “My City Was Gone” if that’s not true? Are the Pretenders Republicans?
Long ago, it did. But now, copyrights have been extended every time that Disney is in danger of losing their copyright on Mickey Mouse.
You’d think all these “stars” who’s careers are currently in a tailspin or non-existent would appreciate their has-been songs get some airplay. Ungreatful wretches!
