A pitiful showing at McCain/Palin GOP convention (Barf Alert)
Newsday ^ | 9/8/2008 | Les Payne

Posted on 09/08/2008 3:01:48 AM PDT by markomalley

Upstaging the GOP presidential candidate who can't read a speech, the exuberant Gov. Sarah Palin exposed the nominee as a listless, 72-year-old senior citizen taking a tricky handoff from the nation's most unpopular commander-in-chief and likely its most incompetent.

John McCain's GOP convention, lest we forget, was blessed at the outset with Hurricane Gustav offering a handy excuse for President George W. Bush to steer clear of St. Paul. The titular head of the party and his fearsome vice president had formed a Category 5 storm taking dead-aim at the Republican National Convention. The McCain-Palin team took to the attic, armed with their hatchets, in case the Bush-Cheney storm surge forced them to hack through the Xcel Center roof.

Under cover of Gustav, the White House duo diverted from the Twin Cities and the GOP Convention was spared last week.

The maneuvering was staged because McCain needed to free himself as a prisoner of Bush's disastrous policy after embracing the president to get the nomination. So the Gulf hurricanes, with the news media in tow, churned up just in time to bail out the convention, sparing the embarrassment of another set of arm-in-arm photos with Bush. Instead, he accepted the handoff from the president safely in the White House, some 1,100 miles away.

President Bush wasn't at the convention, OK, WE GET IT!

I've never seen one idea so relentlessly pummeled home in the first paragraphs of an article.

Newsday is still in business? Their finest hour was when the fictional character “Ray Barone” worked there on “Everyone Loves Raymond” wasn’t it?

Is this moonbat, Payne, a member of MoveOn? Bet he blogs with the Dummy Underground or Daily Kossacks too.

Yep, just another "objective" story in an "unbiased" weekly.

Fortunately, this angry sentiment was located in the Opinion section, rather than masquerading as Real News™.

He is Newsday's angry black voice.

This fish wrapper/bird cage liner is my home town paper. Ergo, I don't read papers.

Nothing irritates a Liberal as much as when his fantasy is not fulfilled.

Listening to Democrats cackle in the days leading up to the Republican convention that dead bodies floating in the water were going to make great video footage to contrast with a partying John McCain, one could not help but be impressed by their degree of heartlessness and their deranged hate of the Republican Party. They were laughing at the prospect that large numbers of people were going to die, and how much fun they were going to have beating up on John McCain as a result.

But things didn’t work out that way. In fact, in a stunning act of political Judo, the Republicans turned the possible negative into a soaring positive, demonstrating compassion and competence, and the positive change that has happened in the party in the past three years. They also gracefully defused the potential time bomb of having a unpopular President at the convention. Of course, the storm cooperated by sparing New Orleans a second thrashing.

Clearly Les Payne already had his column written in his mind, about how the Republicans were fiddling while New Orleans burned. Surely he had already picked out stock phrases to decorate his righteous indignation, and was looking forward to blaming McCain for the mess following Katrina. This would be grossly unfair, of course, but since when is Les Payne fair?

But then reality intruded. New Orleans did not drown. The Republicans did not fail to show concern and compassion. The Republican Governor of Louisiana, in marked contrast to the previous Democrat Governor, performed brilliantly in office and did not have to threaten to punch out anybody. And Les Payne was denied his opportunity to tie an unpopular President to an increasingly popular nominee.

Which meant that Les Payne had to write a new column, which is this piece of dreck, filed five days after the convention closed, instead of the one he had written in his mind, which he had all but filed two days before it opened. Having to do this extra work is what Les Payne resents most of all.

Newsday is still in business?

Surprising, when you consider they will pay somebody big bucks to do such a pitiful job rehashing a convention that closed five days ago. How much money does Les Payne make to turn out one dumb-assed column a week?

I mean, I would buy this paper just for the pleasure of listening to this idiot cry like a baby because somebody took his candy, because those Waskally Wepubwicans noticed that they were walking into a trap. But how many people as petty and vindictive as me are there?

I hate the NY Post. Not for its politics but for its general stupidity.

Beside I live far enough from NY City so that the NY Post is not relevant to where I live.
