MSNBC Drops Olbermann, Matthews as News Anchors
Washington comPost ^ | 9/8/2008 | Howard Kurtz

Posted on 09/08/2008 7:28:43 AM PDT by markomalley

MSNBC is removing Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews as the anchors of live political events, bowing to growing criticism that they are too opinionated to be seen as neutral in the heat of the presidential campaign.

David Gregory, the NBC newsman and White House correspondent who also hosts a program on MSNBC, will take over during such events as this fall's presidential and vice presidential debates and election night.

The move, confirmed by spokesmen for both networks, follows increasingly loud complaints about Olbermann's anchor role at the Democratic and Republican conventions. Olbermann, who regularly assails President Bush and GOP nominee John McCain on his "Countdown" program, was effusive in praising the acceptance speech of Democratic nominee Barack Obama. He drew flak Thursday when the Republicans played a video that included a tribute to the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks, saying that if the networks had done that, "we would be rightly eviscerated at all quarters, perhaps by the Republican Party itself, for exploiting the memories of the dead, and perhaps even for trying to evoke that pain again. If you reacted to that videotape the way I did, I apologize."

Matthews, who has criticized politicians in both parties, drew less criticism for his convention role but became a divisive figure during the primaries when he described how he was inspired by Obama's speeches and made disparaging remarks about Hillary Clinton, for which he later apologized.

In May, MSNBC President Phil Griffin said in an interview that during live events Olbermann and Matthews "put on different hats. I think the audience gets it. . . . I see zero problem."

David Gregory is just as blatantly partisan as Matthews or Olbermann.

It's like FOX sending Rush Limbaugh to cover the DNC.

I get it. Sort of like styrofoam. One day it can look like a majestic temple, and the next day it can look like a phony-balony stage prop. And you know what? I think the audience gets that, too.

The Gregory pick just shows how tone-deaf they are to the legitimate criticism. It's like when Rosie O'Donnel was too brash and controversial on The View, so they replaced her with Whoopi Goldberg.

If David Gregory is the most moderate person working for NBC News, what the heck does that say about NBC News?

The funny part is, NBC spent Tens of Millions of Dollars during the Olympics on promoting the MSNBC team of commentators (Mostly focusing on Matthews and Olbermann) as the best team in politics. Even funnier was the spot where Olbermann talked about how partisan politics has no place in the coverage. Too funny.

You seeing zero problem is, in fact, the problem.

Meanwhile, on NPR two members of the media are being asked about media coverage, and surprisingly they don't see a problem either. Funny how it always works out that way, huh?

How Olbermann survives in the media business with such abysmally low ratings is a bigger mystery than the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa. Glenn Beck or Bill O’Reilly would be in danger of cancellation if their ratings were even close to sinking to Olbermann’s low level. Maybe they keep him around to make the other twits on MSNBC (Crissy Boy, Gregory Boy, and Rachel Boy) look halfway decent by comparison.

Why is Sarah & John letting any of the media, who has been unfairly attacking Sarah, run the debates? You know they will give Obama & Biden the questions ahead of time & throw trick questions to Sarah & John. I would demand something else is done-no NBC debates for sure.

Unfortunately for MSNBC, the audience is only 47 people, everyone else thinks they are as biased as hell and are watching other channels.
