Could Florida Survive the Big One? ($$$$$$$$$)

As Hurricane Ike barrels toward South Florida, Americans can be sure they won't have to endure another catastrophic failure of a hurricane protection system. That's because South Florida doesn't have a hurricane protection system. As South Floridians like to say: Ay dios mio! Ike is now scheduled to pass just south of Miami as a Category 4 storm; National Hurricane Center researchers recently concluded that a Cat 4 hitting Miami could cause $70 billion in damage. To use another South Florida-ism: Oy vey!

Seems a little bit outdated.

Ike is going towards Texas. Wonder why these so called “Experts” jump the gun before Ike even comes towards the US

The article is not really about a particular hurricane.

I’ve witnessed first hand if people shutter up they don’t have any damage.

I have spent thousands on my system and it’s well worth it. But of course it takes individual effort and responsibility. Something the RATS down here don’t have.

Hurricanes in Florida can sometimes be bad but they sometimes clean out a lot of useless flora and fauna. This from a WEBFOOT who has seen many storms since the Labor Day storm of 1935. A person born Key West to Homested =Conch, born between Homestead and Fort Pierce =Webfoot and Ft.Pierce-North into Georgia= Cracker. JSYK/FYI, thank you....

It has been said that had Hurricane Andrew (1992) hit just a few miles north, the damage would have been several times worse. As it was, it hit mostly suburban/rural areas. A cat 5 storm is difficult to get through, even with shutters.

Hurricane protection system? LOL. Blowhard liberals line up on shore and blow hard?

The state cannot protect you, you have to be prepared. An approaching hurricane gives you days to load up on supplies, to board up your windows, get cash, fill your car’s tank, etcetcetc. Drug stores give away free hurricane tracking charts at every checkout counter so you can keep track of the storm’s advance and decide whether or when to go. Blahblahblah. How stupid to expect the state to protect you. What do you want to do, move into the capitol building?

Only after a storm hits can you get help, but it’s not protection, it’s assistance. This writer is clearly some blowhard liberal from the NE.

After Katrina it was said that the difference between a destroyed house and an intact house was often as simple as having the house strapped to the foundation and the roof strapped to the house.

TIME needs more photographs or it will go down the drain with the other Mainstream printed media.

They fail to understand that most of their readership is illiterate.

So Florida's the next NO? I think not.

For all our "dangling out there" -- a fact of geography that's existed since maps were invented -- we see a heck of a lot of storms whiz by -- like Ike, (you idiot who couldn't wait to write this prediction of doom).

We evacuate. We have plans. We don't have levees. We have flood control. We don't loot, and other than the entitled Democrats who infest parts of the state, we don't whine about FEMA. We repair, we rebuild, or we move to another state when we get tired of it all.

We used to live normally through hurricane season until something big looked like it might head this way -- because if you know what you're doing, it doesn't take but a day to do immediate prep. Since Katrina, thanks to the media, it's like being in a hysterical state of seige for months, at the slightest blip on the radar. You can't turn on the radio or TV without assinine media hype.

Go away, Mr. Grunwald. Peddle the doom and gloom elsewhere. People live here because they want to, not because they're afraid their government check might go astray if they move. Stuff happens. Property values get inflated, insurance companies raise rates. We can't control nature, but we can use something you don't have -- common sense -- to protect ourselves.
