RICHMOND, British Columbia (Reuters) - Canada's Conservatives appeared on Monday to be riding a wave of public support that could hand them their first majority government since 1988, but the party did all it could to minimize such expectations.
The Conservatives, who formed a minority government after the last election in 2006, entered the second day of the campaign for the October 14 vote with clear signs of being better organized and financed than their main opposition, the Liberals. Polls also showed voters strongly prefer Prime Minister Stephen Harper over Liberal leader Stephane Dion.
A Segma poll in Monday's La Presse newspaper put support for the Conservatives at 43 percent, which would translate into about 183 seats in the 308-seat House of Commons. The poll gave the Liberals 25 percent, or about 62 seats.
"To say that things are going badly for the Liberals is a euphemism. In fact, it smells like a rout," columnist Vincent Marissal wrote in La Presse.

A landslide win... I see the Conservatives picking up seats in the West, in suburban and rural Ontario and in rural Quebec. Stephen Harper couldn't have picked a better time to call an election. It caught the Liberals and the Bloc off guard who were expecting another fall session of Parliament!

From older articles the Tories might make some major inroads in Quebec. I think they won some by elections in the past.

Spain has a left-wing government. At least for the time being.

I’m so proud of our conservative brothers and sisters up north . They finally figured out how to get together and win instead of fatalistically dividing themselves against the northern liberals. I just spent some time across the pond and the left there is in deep trouble too. The NHS is getting hit left and right because of failing to make cancer drugs available and taking away the Health Services for those who choose to buy the drugs themselves. There is a fair wind blowing in the world. We are seeing the results of what happens when you stand up and make the case against the tired old failed liberalism of the past.

I was commenting to my husband this morning that I haven’t felt so good about politics since Mulroney and Reagan (and beautiful wives) were singing Irish Eyes together. It’s been a long time coming.
And per my tag line, until Mark Steyn runs, Steve has my vote.
