Interesting, I wonder if there is chatter of some kind to this effect.
I say that because it's one thing to say Kim Jong Il unexpectedly didn't make it to the 60th anniversary event, which is highly unusual. It's another thing entirely to give a *specific reason* for why he didn't.
Unless we have a *very* good source inside the regime, then word of whatever happened has leaked out to where we can hear it. Or, at least, very specific rumors have leaked out, and people we are observing are getting the word from somewhere.
It appears the game is afoot.

Either from U.S. Sig-Intel or Chinese human intelligence inside N. Korea.

Either from U.S. Sig-Intel or Chinese human intelligence inside N. Korea. I'd be surprised if we're getting good HUMINT that fast out of the DPRK itself. I'm speculating here, but if our friends in the Middle Kingdom have gotten the word from their agents on the inside, we could be seeing reflections from their reporting. Their HUMINT, our SIGINT. ;-)

Could be classic palace intrigue among princes(Kim's son,) Kim's latest consort(unofficial wife,) his sister and her husband. Each can line up their faction and join the struggle. There are three princes, and two elder ones are significant players. China could back the first prince, who is China's favorite.
A losing faction may not go down quietly this time. They could try to enlist outside help. China is an obvious candidate, but S. Korea and U.S. are also possible.
