Palin bills state for nights at home, kids’ travel (Press swinging wildly)

ANCHORAGE - Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has billed taxpayers for 312 nights spent in her own home during her first 19 months in office, charging a "per diem" allowance intended to cover meals and incidental expenses while traveling on state business.

The governor also has charged the state for travel expenses to take her children on official out-of-town missions. And her husband, Todd, has billed the state for expenses and a daily allowance for trips he makes on official business for his wife.

Palin, who earns $125,000 a year, claimed and received $16,951 as her allowance, which officials say was permitted because her official "duty station" is Juneau, according to an analysis of her travel documents by The Washington Post.

No different than millions of government employees who get paid per diem. If Alaska gives per diem for this arrangement, that is their business. The media is trying to spin a normal reimbursement into something synical. I guess the media got bored attacking Sarah’s children.

I suspect this opens the door for us to soon hear juicy details about how much money other candidates have similarly taken, as provided for by law.

Swinging and striking out!

This is more proof the MSM is becoming really desperate in their pursuit of political dirt. When the Palin family brought the future groom to the convention, it proved Sarah would fight in hell to deem her family off limits. The MSM had to move on.

Anytime you see “per diem” with a political accusation, it screams, “We’re really desperate.”

Agreed. Take a look at today’s Washington Post to see how much they are grasping at straws.

Of course, there is no bias there at all /sarcasm

How many other governors (and how many in the entire US Congress) do NOT claim per diem? Per diem really just becomes another pat of the compensation. I am certain Sarah Palin is doing what other Governors did before her, but on a much more ethical scale.

Sarah Palin’s “home” became the governor's residence when she was elected. Travel back to Wasilla is no longer travel to her “home”. Since when does anyone compare the duties and travel reqts of a Governor with someone on a State Commission?

Over the past 35 years, how much did Plugs bill the taxpayers for Amtrak fare to Delaware?

It would be fascinating to see the complete exposure of how many of our Congress claim per diem either while in Washington, or when back in their home states. Not to mention travel expenses back and forth. Not to mention paying reduced homestead residence taxes both on their mansions in DC and back in their home states.

Does Hillary claim per diem when she is in Chappaqua, or when she is in Georgetown?

And for the figures they dug up in Alaska- it seems Palin saved the taxpayers that much and more by firing the governor's chef, selling the governor's plane and flying coach! This is NOT a pretentious woman?

Now, let's compare Nancy Pelosi’s expense claims on the other hand...

which officials say was permitted because her official "duty station" is Juneau,

So it was legal in Alaska. I hope the part about her family members was legal as well. That isn't how the left is going to spin it. They are on an no-holds-barred effort to get her. The libs will be all over this one.

Let's also check those tax returns and make sure everyone in Washington is only deducting mortgage interest and property taxes on one residence.

I already have, thank you. You’re absolutely right. These jackasses are beside themselves and they cannot figure out why their “Messiah” has suudenly headed down the slippery slope of political death.

I don’t know the answer to this but I wonder if Senators - who have residences in Washington as well as their home states - get per diems at one or the other. Or both. Just wondering.

Bob Beckel was practically jumping up and down in his seat as he excitedly launched this new talking point to the Friends this morning. The Friends have been quite united in their support for Sarah Palin and President Bush this week.

This story was on the front page of our local paper this morning. When you read it you realize there is nothing to the story and it is an obvious heat piece. It is so obvious the MSM and their liberal buddies will do anything to destroy this woman. This is just the beginning. It is going to get much worse. They are truly scared.

A qick search did not reveal much. It seems they all get a travel allowance depending on how far away they live. They have proposed per diem allowances, but I have yet to see that they actually have one. The fact is that this per diem is part of the compensation package for an Alaskan governor and that's all that matters. I know most states congress people get a per diem allowance when they travel to the capitol for business. In Minnisota they just voted to make it $93 a day.

Wonder who has been footing the bill for Joe Biden’s daily train tickets for the past 30 years. I’ll bet it’s not Joe.
