Dude Dads (Forget Sarah Palin. The swing voters to watch might look more like her husband, Todd)
Slate ^ | Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008 | Bruce Reed

NASCAR on Ice: Every election, pollsters and pundits introduce another voter group whose views are certain to decide the outcome: soccer moms, NASCAR dads, security moms, office park dads, and (three times in the past week) Wal-Mart moms. These categories, while sometimes useful, share an important methodological flaw: On Election Day, when undecided voters finally make up their minds, exit pollsters don't ask them where they work or where they shop, what sports they watch or what games their children play. Exit polls eschew these trendy questions in favor of boring demographic perennials like age, race, gender, education, and income level.

Precisely because exit poll questions don't change much from one cycle to the next, however, they provide an interesting portrait of how the electorate evolves—or doesn't. Some segments of the electorate are fiercely loyal to one party; others lean toward one party but more dramatically in some years than others.

According to exit polls, the most volatile swing voter group over the last 20 years hasn't been hockey moms like Sarah Palin, commuter dads like Joe Biden, or soccer parents like Barack and Michelle Obama. Over the last two decades, the swing voters most prone to moving away from Republicans in elections Democrats won and toward Republicans in elections Republicans won have been white men with a degree from high school but not college. In other words, forget Sarah Palin: In recent elections, the biggest swingers looked more like her husband, Todd.

Democrats don't need to win a majority among white men without bachelors' degrees, but it's crucial to cut our losses. In 2000 and 2004, Democrats lost that group by about 30 percent.

I’m sure his campaign will be sure to have him seen eating and drinking during the daylight hours. Muslims are sometimes excused from strict observance if it furthers the Muslim cause to do so, that is, if he is an observant Muslim which I doubt. (I think he’s a non-observant Muslim, personally.) He’s making the gaffes because his campaign isn’t turning out the way it was scripted and, for the first time in his life, something will not be just handed to him outright. He isn’t used to fighting for something: not college, not law school, not his jobs, not his lecturer position, not his political offices, not legislation. Up until now, everything has just been served to him on a silver platter and this is really throwing him off.

I think you might have posted this on the wrong thread. You are the first person I’ve heard who thinks Todd Palin is a Muslim!!

“I think he’s a non-observant Muslim, personally.”

I think Obama is much like his supporters.

And your comment led to this observation.

He’s a ‘convenient’ Muslim. (Muslim when it’s convenient, Christian when it’s not)

He’s a ‘convenient’ anarchist,lesbian,gay,high-roller,community organizer,coke snorter,weed puffer,baby killer,politician,father,husband,money launderer,lawyer,Marxist (oh, I could just go on forever!)

and lots of pork ribs and bacon. if he really is muslim that would be quite sad because I’m jewish and I would never eat pork or break a fast day just to get elected.

I think you meant to post your comment on this thread:

“Is Obama making gaffes due to Ramadan fasting? (vanity)”

It follows this thread.

Barack Obama is a secular yuppie. He is not a Muslim in any sense of the word. His real dad was an atheist, his stepdad was a lukewarm Muslim, and his mother was an atheist.

There is NOTHING remotely Muslim about his ideology or behavior. He will get more Jewish support than Muslim support in this country btw.

This tin foil hat "Obama is a Muslim" BS is getting annoying. He is a secular urbanite, nothing more, nothing less. Whatever school he attended is meaningless.

I was a little confused then I realized this is written by a Democrat in a Dem blog on a pro-Dem website (Slate).

My belief is that whatever religion to which he was exposed was Muslim. I did not say he was an active Muslim. I believe he is a lapsed Muslim, and that he is irreligious. In his adulthood it appears that any religious tendencies of his has been strictly for personal gain as a community organizer and later on a representative for a largely black Christian district. I don’t believe he adheres to any religion anymore than does Nancy Pelosi or other pro-abortion Catholics. They believe they adhere but I dispute that if they have problems with the core beliefs of their professed faiths. Obama claims to be Christian. I believe his advocacy is in direct contravention to both Christian and Muslim beliefs. He is simply an opportunist. I don’t believe he would turn this nation over to Muslim interests anymore than he would do so for Christian interests. Perhaps I misspoke (miswrote?) myself in saying he was Muslim.

Prolly right. It’s getting late. As SNL’s gaffe lady would say, “Never mind.”

Yes, but he’s replying to an article about Todd, and he didn’t specify who he was talking about.

The dems lost these voters in 2000 and 2004 because they ran girly-men wusses who these men couldn't possibly relate to. And guess who they chose this year? YES! Another girly-man, arugula-eating, mincing weenie who couldn't lift a motorcycle off its kickstand and has probably never shot a gun.
