Pennsylvania's statewide smoking ban, 15 years in the making in Harrisburg, became law today.

Cindy Thomas, executive director of Tobacco Free Allegheny, has provided answers to these questions about the new law, which bans smoking in most public places and is aimed at making the state's workplaces smoke-free.

What penalties does a person face if he or she is caught smoking in a place where smoking is prohibited?

The Clean Indoor Air Act provides for the following penalties:

The owner, operator or manager of the premises may be penalized for failure to post proper signs. Each offense can bring a fine of $250 to $1,000.

Looks like we are no longer the “Land of the free and the home of the brave”. Funny thing is, I'd wager that there are some freepers who support this. We have become so inured to living in a nanny state that too many of us accept it without question.

Pennsylvania tyrants celebrate 9/11 by implementing Taliban-style morality. (I'm home in PA as I type this.)

"Of all tyrannies a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience."

My smoke’s been banned everywhere for decades. Even in my own home. Let the cig smokers whine. Welcome to reality.

- We have become so inured to living in a nanny state that too many of us accept it without question.

There's the story about Lafayette, who during the French Revolution sprung the door of the Bastille to let out the political prisoners. Once out, the old men looked around, shied from the light, and slowly went right back to the cell, security's stranglehold.

America - a nation of tired, expended spirit, and the youth without a clue.

Hi, Gabz! Very nice to see you again, my dear. I hope all is well with you and yours.

I went to a casino is Erie yesterday. I asked them which 25% of the casino floor will be for smoking. Of course, it's the section which I never play.

It's a shame that they can't even allow one place where adults can be adults, especially when they have air filtration systems.
