Election-Year Plan Opens Door to All Of U.S.'s Coastlines

WASHINGTON -- House Democrats, some chanting "drill, drill," embraced a plan to open the door for more oil and natural-gas exploration along the entire U.S. coastline, in a shift showing the power of the energy issue in this election.
Under a compromise bill hammered out in a series of closed-door meetings Wednesday on Capitol Hill, the House Democratic leadership agreed on a plan that would authorize drilling along the entire coastline, though new production would hinge on states agreeing to participate. Previously, Democrats proposed opening the door to expanded drilling along only a portion of the Atlantic seaboard, from Virginia to Georgia, and the Gulf Coast of Florida.
The new proposal would potentially open areas off the coast of California that have been closed to new oil drilling for more than two decades. The measure could be voted on as soon as Friday.
The Democrats' turnabout marks a victory for the oil industry and Republicans, who have seized on the drilling issue in recent months. With gasoline prices still high at the pump, polls show Americans in favor of expanded oil production at home, and Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain has made the issue central to his campaign, as have congressional Republicans.
Even Sen. Barack Obama, the Democratic Party's presidential standard-bearer, has endorsed expanded drilling as part of a comprehensive bill boosting conservation and renewable energy, such as wind and solar power.

GOP needs to just let the moratorium on drilling expire on Oct 1, 2008..then drill, drill, drill.
Queen Pelosi could join up with Obama and Biden as vice-vice president. They could be the Three Stooges.
If the Republicans pass the Bill, without getting ANWAR included; it’s a sell-out and will be touted as a Democrat Victory (which will be the case anyway, as Nancy will be holding a Press Conference to claim “she” got it done and “protected the planet” in the process).
The GOP members know better than to trust any viper bill. They’ll give it a hard look [except for the Grahamnesty Gang of course].
After the House Rebellion, I think it’s safe to say that conservatives own this issue.
I suspect that such initiatives could stall in the Senate due to the “Sex, Drugs, and Black Gold” scandal just exposed in the Interior Department.

Last month (I think) the Senate came up with a plan that is so different from any potential House bill that it would take extensive committee negotiation and thus won’t be passed before the election. Pelosi and the Dems know that and this vote is all political theatre. If they hold the House and Senate (pretty much a given) and Obama wins you will never hear of this bill again. Ever.
We shouldn't have to pay a bribe to the "Alternative energy" charlatans in order to drill for oil.
Basically, the Dems are admitting that Bush was right afterall when he proposed more drilling in his 2001 Energy Plan. And that is the Energy Plan that the Dems blocked by demonizing Cheney and Halliburton. Someone should point this out. If they’d passed the bill back in 2001, we would not be in a slow economy now.
