Weather service warns of 'certain death' in face of Ike

(CNN) -- Residents living in single-family homes in some parts of coastal Texas face "certain death" if they do not heed orders to evacuate ahead of Hurricane Ike's arrival, the National Weather Service said Thursday night.

My son in law and grandson are stranded on Dolphin Island near Mobile. They’ve closed the bridge do to surge flooding.

The following from the forecast:

Coastal storm surge flooding of up to 20 feet above normal tide
levels...along with large and dangerous battering waves...can be
expected near and to the east of where the center of Ike makes
landfall...except at the heads of bays...where surge flooding of up
to 25 feet could occur. Coastal storm surge flooding of 6 to 8 feet
above normal tide levels...along with large and dangerous
waves...can be expected within the Tropical Storm Warning area
along the northern Gulf Coast. Above normal tides in the eastern
Gulf of Mexico should gradually subside over the next day or so.

“If your house has an eve that’s 14 feet, it would be completely under water,” Perry said. “That’s the type of surge we’re talking about all through Galveston and all the way up into the (Houston) Ship Channel.”

If a Category 5 storm went up the Ship Channel with no evacuation, Perry said, the estimated death toll would be 1.5 million people.

Katrina knocked the heck out of three states last I remember. Ike has the potential to knock the heck out of almost 4 or 5 entire states. They need to start evacuating now to save as many people as possible.

Yikes for sure! I'd be hearing those reports from my car radio while driving north, if I were anywhere near it. Let's hope people heed this warning.

Please stop with the hysterics. Ike already reached it’s peak strength before hitting Cuba and is now a spent force.

At this time Katrina already reached Cat Five (twice) and made landfall as a cat three.

Ike already passed the points where hurricanes in the gulf gain strenght and Ike gained little. At this time it’s 100 mph and little to no chance of strengthening.

A dangerous storm yes, A monster, no.
