I didn’t know that Charles Curtis was 37.5% Native American: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Curtis

One learns something new every day-—and several new things every day if one visits FR. : )

Charles Curtis, Herbert Hoover's VP. He wasn't full blooded but if I recall was recognized by and raised in the tribe.

While doing some work a couple of years ago on the San Carlos Apache Reservation in Arizona, I found that those folks are some of the most patriotic Americans I have ever encountered, with American flags and George Bush photographs everywhere.

There's a big desert cemetery there, overlooking several churches, that looks like a virtual forest of flag poles, hundreds of them dotting the hillside. Each flagpole is emplaced on a veteran's grave, and on Labor Day (a major holiday on the reservation), those deceased Apache veterans are honored with American flags flying from those poles. It really is a sight to behold!

"I am not a fan of "hyphenated-America" so I'll stick with Indian,...

I would rather they identify themselves by the tribal nation they are a member of. Then -American. They do not live the same way. 'Native American' invokes the image of horses and a guy with a bow and arrow. That's wrong.

If you rememeber, during WW2, the ship-to-ship communications were done in Navaho against the Japanese! They never understood what was being said.

‘’I would rather they identify themselves by the tribal nation they are a member of. Then -American.’’

But think of the hundreds of tribal names, its too confusing. Native does seem to work and it’s historically accurate.
What is truly stupid is Russian-American, German-American, Irish-American, Japanese-American and yes -African-American. They are all labelling titles that are divisive within America and serve no positive interest.

If a person emigrates to France do they call themselves German-French, Jordanian-French, Egyptian-French. Or Australia: Irish-Australian, Portugese-Australian, Swedish-Australian.

I hope other countries don’t hyphenate their citizens in this way.

If you ever attend a Pow-Wow you will note the high honor they pay to their veterans and soldiers.

There have also been a number of Presidents of the U.S. who were descended from Rebecca Powhattan White (Poccahontas):
John Tyler
Benjamin Harrison
Zachary Taylor
William Henry Harrison
Dwight David Eisenhower
George Herbert Walker Bush
George Walker Bush

Now a certain young married woman had children and suffered much. Now she is with child again and her mother wishing to prevent further sufferings designs to administer a medicine to cut off the child and to prevent forever other children from coming. So the mother makes the medicine and gives it. Now when she does this she forever cuts away her daughter's string of children. Now it is because of such things that the Creator is sad. He created life to live and he wishes such evils to cease. He wishes those who employ such medicines to cease such practices forevermore. Now they must stop when they hear this message. Go and tell your people.'"

Beautifully pro-life! Thanks for posting it.

I understand your point. Alaska was bought from the Russians a long time ago as I understand. Then it became a commonwealth, like Puerto Rico and Hawaii. Basically it's own country. People from DC go there and are basically asking- "What country are you from with your flagrancy?"

You can't call Inuits Indians. There is no connection. And they haven't built a casino so far. They are fine with a lot of other work. And I don't see illegal aliens going there to serve drinks and food at the tables. They may lose their tan.

Tribal Nations should identify themselves - American. That would screw up identity politics for liberals by sheer overloads and make them go nuts. Then they would also have to add white heterosexual males. Lesbian females.

It would fall under it's own weight. That's the reasoning I came to. Everybody would have a claim for a job based on a status. This entitlement idea will fail.

Too bad Ayn Rand isn't with us anymore. 'Atlas Shrugged' may be where we are going. That book is from 1957.

They know better than any other Americans to never trust the government.

So true!

My hubby is part native American. He thinks Obama sucks.

Hey Barry, you Chi town whore, The US is not local politics you fool. You and the Jeremiah idea of America does not gell with the people outside of south Chicago.

Community Organizing doesn’t work across America.

As a Navajo, I know the history. My family served but were not "code talkers", just soldiers. Many Navajo served - even my Grandmother and her mother worked in the munition plant.

The language is Dinebizaad and I just go by "American"

Ooops ! having a brain fart in public is embarassing...
Here’s the correction to my previous post:
Rebecca Poccahontas’s married name was Rolfe, not White.
Zachary Taylor was related to her descendants but not one of them.
