Why not? They had no problem believing that Bill Clinton's reference to Obama's "fairy tale" rise was racist, nor for that matter, numerous other innocuous remarks made by people that the Obama campaign surrogates cried "racism!" about. For that matter, I can just imagine Michelle Obama giving Barack the idea to say it, it sounds like just the kind of thing a jealous catty woman would say, not a man (well, maybe a metrosexual type like Obama would).

Based on the crowd response, I'd suggest that they sure as hell interpreted it that way.

I can't comprehend why there is any argument over this contention.

Sure, it was a childish cheap shot. But that's the kind of candidate the Democrats nominated. So, let's all get beyond it...including the press.
