Is Grandpa Bad for the Environment?
Slate ^ | Sep 9, 2008 | Jacob Leibenluft

Everyone's always talking about how an aging population, with more retirees, is going to wreak havoc on Social Security and the federal budget. Here's my question: What impact will that have on the planet? After all, my grandparents don't seem to care much about global warming, their refrigerator is from the 1970s, and they use an awful lot of air conditioning at home. Give it to me straight: Are Grandma and Grandpa bad for the environment?

"Do it for the kids" has always been one of the most popular arguments in favor of environmentalism: Older people need to get their act together, or else it's the children who will suffer the environmental consequences. Indeed, in terms of what they buy and how they vote, younger Americans tend to be more eco-conscious than seniors, who are less likely than anyone else to believe that global warming is a man-made phenomenon. But here's the weird thing: In practice, it's the older folks who are better for the environment.

" younger Americans tend to be more eco-conscious than seniors..."

do young Americans know how to gut a pig, grow a fruitful garden, fix their own car, plow a field, can vegetables, or even stare in wonder at the night sky without the "beep" of a text message on their cell phones?

God help us!

as i watch my father grow older, and look around at the youth of today, i cannot but wonder where all of the true grit our ancestors showed has gone.

sadly, i think that we are a dying nation.

I am so sorry I spent the time to read this. I can't believe there are really people that think like this.

This article is NOT green. Somebody wasted a lot of energy researching and writing it.

What an ass. Gramps generation fairly INVENTED air-conditioning and refrigerators. The writer (assuming this isn’t satire) has whatever virus spreading around these days turning people into self-loathing emasculated neo-Luddites. They won’t fare very well, paradoxically.

Slam old people.
McCain is old.
Obama is young.

I wonder if the author is recommending the "Soylent Green" option or the "Logan's Run" option??

gee. those people at slate are so smart. they can figure anything out and intellectualize every issue they conjure up in order to manipulate everybody and confiscate money. one wonders why they don’t just cancel the elections and just hand power over to the democrats at slate, the democrats in the congress and the democrats who surround every tax dollar and who just love to be smart and call everyone else a moron.

IMHO

"Americans tend to be more eco-conscious than seniors, who are less likely than anyone else to believe that global warming is a man-made phenomenon."

That;s because it isn't. And it isn't just "old" people that know this either. What granny and grandpa need to do is sell their assets, rent or buy a nice retirement condo for themselves, and have fun blowing their sniveling, ungrateful grandchildren inheritance having a good time in their golden years. The sniveling 'global warming" brats need to work so they have less time to indulge in 'global warming" propaganda.
