The President in addition to his normal radio address participated in a video teleconference briefing on Hurricane Ike and then made a statement to the press concerning Hurricane Ike.
He has also declared a major disaster exists in the State of Louisiana and Texas allowing them to get additional Federal funding.

President Bush Discusses Hurricane Ike

THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. I just finished a video conference with Secretary Chertoff, Director Paulison, and other people about Hurricane Ike.
Obviously, this is a huge storm that is causing a lot of damage not only in Texas, but also in parts of Louisiana. The storm has yet to pass, and I know there are people concerned about their lives. Some people didn't evacuate when asked, and I've been briefed on the rescue teams there in the area. They're prepared to move as soon as weather conditions permit. Obviously, people on the ground there are sensitive to helping people, and are fully prepared to do so.
Secondly, I've asked Secretary Chertoff to go down as soon as weather conditions permit. I suspect he'll be able to get down to Texas this afternoon and will be in the Gulf Coast region hopefully within a reasonable period of time to help the state of Texas -- officials, as well as local officials, begin the recovery effort. There's going to be a need for federal, state, and local coordination as this storm moves through East Texas.
Obviously, there will be concerns about electricity. We got generators in place, generators moving into the area to help. They'll be concerned about water and ice. They'll be concerned about energy, and I'm concerned about energy.
This administration has moved quickly. Last night we suspended EPA waivers* on certain reformulated gasolines, which will make it easier for imports from abroad to make it into our markets. In the meantime, the Department of Energy, the Federal Trade Commission, and I know state authorities will be monitoring gasoline prices to make sure consumers are not being gouged, make sure consumers are being treated fairly.
As this massive storm moves through the Gulf Coast, people of that area can be rest assured that the American people will be praying for them and will be ready to help once the storm moves on.

As this past Thursday marked the last ceremony commemorating those dreadful events of 11th September 2001 that the President and the Vice President will be in office I thought it might be an opportunity to look back at previous commemorations of this terrorist attack as we are all probably in a reflective mood this weekend.
I will start with events of 11th September 2001 and the White House Website have a timeline which is helpful to remind us of exactly what the sequence of events were, if indeed we need that reminder. Click here.
I have chosen 4 photos which symbolise the day to me in relation to the administration and responsibility I believe that they must have felt that day. The first one is the photo when Andy Card first advised the President of the events that were enfolding, the President then took the view like the responsible parent he is in order not to alarm the school children he was reading to at the time to carry on reading for a few more minutes which no doubt also helped him to compose himself and think about what he would have deal with.
The second is the incident/control room at White House where the Vice President controlled and monitored events prior to the President returning to the White House. The President insisted in returning to the White House that night showing the terrorists that he and the United States of America were not afraid for him to return to State Capital and the White House and of course to be with his beloved Laura.
The third is the President conferring with the Vice President from AF1 what thoughts and feelings must have been going through his mind at that moment. One I would suggest was gratitude that his Vice President was Dick Cheney, gratitude that maybe many people both in the US and rest of the western world would do well to ponder on. This was during a time when many were living a false feeling of security and invincibility and although Islam had made many warning shots not many had taken them seriously.
This was probably the case even with many within the Bush administration and this was a time that Dick Cheney's experience was so needed and has insured IMHO that future Presidents who maybe weak on terrorists etc have an appreciation of what they are capable of and even if they do not openly admit it would ensure that there are people around them with this knowledge.
The fourth is the Vice President viewing the White House from Marine 2 and although this is actually 12th September and shows him returning to the White House this photo seems so poignant and probably sums up a lot of the feelings that all members of the Bush Administration were feeling and thinking that day and for a few days and probably even months after. 9/11 and probably the first few days after many no doubt believe has framed the rest of the George W Bush Presidency and lead to various interpretations of what people believe to be the "The Bush Doctrine". This photo also mentions the Vice President returning from an undisclosed location which again has become especially in the minds of the press a feature of the Bush Presidency especially in the first term and early second term.
I also was tempted to include the photo of the President throwing out the ball in New York a few days later; but this was more a response and a statement to the world that we are not afraid and broken and willing to give into terrorists, rather than reflection on the actual events of 9/11 and I will leave that photo and others similar to maybe another weekend dose thread. This thread is purely to remember the event and show the somber and reverend commemoration on the anniversary of the event each year subsequently.
I am not sure if enjoy Sanity Island is the right comment or whether we should say appreciate and think on what Sanity Island and that day really means to us and to all Americans and even the rest of the non Muslim world even if they do not realise it. PHOTOS OF 9/11/2001
