Slang for “owned”, “badly beaten”.

It's a slang term in the internet gaming world for "owned." It means to completely humiliate and dominate an opponent and is mostly likely derived from a simple "typo" as "p" is adjacent to "o" on the keyboard.

That is not the only typo that became famous. Here on Free Republic, typos are circulated all the time as real words. Particularly the substitution of "series" for "serious".

Probably the most famous internet gaming phrase of all is "All your base belongs to us" which is a poor translation of dialogue from a Japanese video game. That phrase had a lot of use on Free Republic as well.

What does “pwned” mean?

It's a term used by gamers on the internet to demonstrate that the contest is/was strictly one-sided. It comes from the term, "owned", but ofetn gets miskeyed, with the "o" being miskeyed as "p" (the next letter on the keyboard.)

The miskeyed version has stuck in the argot of internet gamers, and is seeping into general use...
