“Sarah Palin not only believes in God, she belongs, to the horror of her liberal critics, to the Assemblies of God, an evangelical church.”
Get your facts straight. (1) She has not been a member of AOG for six years. (2) AOG is not an evangelical church. It is a Pentacostal church. They are different. It is one of the older, larger and one of the most racially diverse congregations in America.
While any Christian denomination worth its salt is “evangelical” in the sense that was Christ’s commission to us (”Tell all nations about Me”), AOG believes that the gifts of the spirit manifest today—not just in Apolostic times. Members regularly manifest those gifts. The gifts of the spirit do not include snake handling in AOG.
Its pastors are almost always seminary trained, very bright, and deeply devoted to their mission. I get a charge out of the old media’s conviction that Christians (especially Christian pastors) are stupid. Anyone who can read and understand Paul’s epistles in depth is bright enough to graduate from Harvard, high in their class. It’s just that they chose a different, and much more rewarding, path.
Thank you for your spirited defense of AOG. It was an AOG/COGIC family almost 40 years ago that helped turn me around from being a rebellious neo-pagan adolescent to being a believing Christian. Now as a Catholic, I love the AOG/COGIC church people with a sincere and grateful love.
