Palin’s Emails Hacked: A.P. Won't Help Secret Service
CNS News ^ | September 18, 2008 | Ted Bridis

Posted on 09/18/2008 9:41:36 AM PDT by Nachum

Hackers broke into the Yahoo! e-mail account that Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin used for official business as Alaska's governor, revealing as evidence a few inconsequential personal messages she has received since John McCain selected her as his running mate.

"This is a shocking invasion of the governor's privacy and a violation of law. The matter has been turned over to the appropriate authorities and we hope that anyone in possession of these e-mails will destroy them," the McCain campaign said in a statement.

The Secret Service contacted The Associated Press on Wednesday and asked for copies of the leaked e-mails, which circulated widely on the Internet. The AP did not comply.

The disclosure Wednesday raises new questions about the propriety of the Palin administration's use of nongovernment e-mail accounts to conduct state business. The practice was revealed months ago -- prior to Palin's selection as a vice presidential candidate -- after political critics obtained internal e-mails documenting the practice by some aides.

One person whose e-mail to Palin apparently was among those disclosed, Amy B. McCorkell, declined to discuss her correspondence. "I do not know anything about it," McCorkell said. "I'm not giving you any comment." Wired.com said McCorkell later confirmed that she did send the e-mail to Palin.

Another of the e-mails apparently revealed Wednesday was an exchange in July with Alaska Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell discussing a talk show host who had been critical of Parnell. Parnell declined to discuss the matter.

Palin herself used "gov.sarah" in one of her e-mail addresses, but the hackers targeted her "gov.palin" account. Her husband used "fek9wnr" in his address. "Fe" is the representation for iron, and "k9" is an abbreviation for canine. Todd Palin was the winner of the grueling Iron Dog snowmobile race, and "fek9wnr" also is Todd Palin's vehicle license tag in Alaska.

It wasn't immediately clear how hackers broke into Palin's Yahoo! account, but it would have been possible to trick the service into revealing her password knowing personal details about Palin that include her birthdate and ZIP code. A hacker also might have sent a forged e-mail to her account tricking her into revealing her own password.

McCorkell was appointed by Palin to an advisory board on issues involving alcohol and drug abuse. One of the leaked e-mails suggested McCorkell wrote to Palin on Sunday to say she was praying for Palin. "Don't let the negative press get you down!" the message said.

You know, if there were any threatening emails in there and something happens to her, can anything happen to the AP for withholding that info?

What in the world is Sarah Palin using a yahoo email for official anything?

That is beyond irresponsible.

Yahoo is only for throw away mail!

Can’t they have a judge subpoena the information from AP????

Then they have to comply or face court issues.

I didn’t know you could withhold evidence during a criminal investigation? This is new to me.

I suppose you can refuse to cooperate, and get charged with hindering prosecution.

BUT, if a judge subpoenas that information you better give it up or face more sever charges.

at least that is my take on it.

Yes and someone on another thread cited the law but I can’t find it just now.

The secret service will get the emails - we don’t know the whole story.

My GUESS is that A/P’s legal staff told them that they needed a subpeona - which shouldn’t be a big deal.

What in the world is Sarah Palin using a yahoo email for official anything?

From all I've heard, it wasn't used for official business. There was someone on Fox last night affirming that.

the FBI and the SS better get on top of this because if a sitting governor and a Vice Presidential candidate let alone a mother of 5 isn’t protected from the nuts and the crazies, none of us have a chance..

Hypothetical: Hack Barak Obama’s emails, send a few to AssPress, and see if they don’t go sharing them with the media as well as focusing resources to uncover your identity.

Heck, you don’t even need to actually hack his email, just claim you did and see how they react.

For the sarcastic-impaired, I will now state that I do not encourage ANY hacking and would like for AP to work WITH the Secret Service in such investigations PRIOR to the election as this right now puts AP in defense of those who’ve criminally invaded Mrs. Palin’s privacy. All those idiotorials about wiretapping and courts are worthless now that they defend breaking in and stealing someone’s communcations and publicizing them.

PS. the Left has been bragging about illegally having Gov. Palin’s social security number for over a week.

O’Reilly says that he knows who did it and that he is calling the attorney general, today.

Careful that you don’t do what the mainstream media wants you to do. They put out this headline that says “Palin email hacked” with an ominous sounding sentence in the first paragraph or two that sounds like this: “The situation fueled speculation that the governor has used a personal email account to conduct state business.”

The problem is that there is no evidence that she used a personal email account to conduct state business. The evidence shows that the hacked personal email account was used FOR PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE. The MSM hopes that people will ignore that part and just assume that, well, of course there must be something bad there if the account was hacked.

Don’t make that leap of logic - it isn’t true. The facts don’t bear that out. The hacker himself has said that there was nothing damaging there.

The AP would go to great lengths to shelter murdering bank robbers if the loot was donated to the BO campaign.
