Gorbachev honored with Liberty Medal (Constitution Center)

Van Cliburn didn't play, Bruce Hornsby wasn't introduced, and the guest of honor's English interpreter could barely be heard by much of the outdoor audience.

Other than that, the 2008 Liberty Medal ceremony honoring former Soviet leader Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev went off without a hitch tonight at the National Constitution Center.

Against the backdrop of clouding relations between the United States and Russia, former President George H.W. Bush, chairman of the center, presented the 20th annual award to Gorbachev for his role in ending the Cold War and bringing democracy to the formerly communist Soviet Union.

"Regardless of the dividing lines between us, President Gorbachev opened up new possibilities for the world to come together and solve its problems in the pursuit of liberty," Bush said.

WTF? Why are we honoring a former totalitarian dictator?

Does anyone really think it was his idea for Eastern Europe to fall and the Wall to come down?

I think there is a law somewhere that says when you become an ex President you have to become a commie loving, despot coddling, foreign affairs meddling appeaser.

Obviously someone didn’t get the memo that Russia has entered into their Soviet Union Part Deux phase.

I remember how the press loved it when Gorby would mock President Reagan and publicly insult his intelligence by saying Reagan always said the same dumb old thing “ trust but verify”. Heap those medals on ,as W would say “ heck of a job Gorby”.

his idea for Eastern Europe to fall and the Wall to come down?

if it had been, he could have taken Ronald Reagan up on the offer.

I see they had Judy Collins there. She should have sang “Send in the Clowns” instead of Amazing Grace.

This whole deal was basically a mutual admiration society of political elites patting one of there own on the back.

["...award to Gorbachev for his role in ending the Cold War and bringing democracy to the formerly communist Soviet Union."]

Did Ronald Reagan receive an honorable mention? If so, I must have missed it.

Looking at the list of past recipients, it is clear that this is just one more case of liberal institutions rewarding failed liberals.

Dear President Reagan,

You know who they are. The ones giving out the award. Closet Communists.

Your award comes from the heart of good and decent Americans who will always remember what you said and did.

Sincerely,

US

How far we have fallen when we imitate the old commies and banana republics by awarding phony medals ? I still have a gut full from when George Tenet got a medal for being a CIA director who could not so much as foresee the coming of winter .

Totally undeserved. Gorbachev was, first and foremost, a communist who was trying to preserve the Soviet Union. The true hero was the despised (by liberals and leftists) Yeltsin.

Liberty Medal?

What's next, a Taxpayer of the Year Award for Charlie Rangel?

if, in the’92 campaign, GHW Bush had made a point of thanking the portion of the electorate that had stood by Reagan’s and to some extent his own efforts , instead of running off after Gorbachev and nuclear freeze as the Dems had, he would have come a lot closer to keeping Toon out of the White House.

How many people did this man murder? It will be good when McCain is President and the Republicans can put this era behind them.

Why honor this watermelon putz? He didn’t want to end communism or the Soviet Union, it fell apart because they couldn’t keep up with us. Star Wars broke their bank. They still bitch about anti-missile defense systems.

This guy never stopped being a communist. He went green (ie the Green Cross) and is promoting communism through environmentalism.

It is a disgrace Bush honored him, and took part in this stupid ceremony to begin with.
