I totally agree with your post (above). In addition to disagreeing with his political views 100%, having someone like Obama as POTUS is not a message I care to send. Having lived through the Watts riots, the OJ verdict fiasco, the Rodney King riots, ad nauseum, I have no desire to empower those blacks who are racists to make extreme demands and threats if they don’t get their way.

I kind of was sucked into reading this thread - No good ideas - but when I read this post of yours, I was taken aback, and had to think a while - for about an hour, in fact.
Now that I have, I must say that I am forced to agree with you. Although I’ve always had the personal opinion that I would vote for a Keyes(I supported his run)/ Steele/ JCWatts - this crystallizes something for me, I’m afraid to say:
Until the day comes that the vast majority of black (and white) Americans can look past the color of the skin when they are choosing who to vote for, and the policies that are “right” for America, I may not be able to vote for someone who is black for national office due to the pressure that you quite rightly point out will be put on them solely due to their race.
I believe that America HAS reached that stage with respect to M/F now and that the sniping at Palin is not related to her sex, but is due to ideology. Unfortunately, that is not true about Obama. Partially in evidence, I believe there are thousands of white “community organizers” with equivalent experience and degrees who have not been able to get near a seat in the IL senate or the US Congress - and that the only reason Obama is the Dem nominee is racially based.

This is EXACTLY why it is not time for even a _conservative_ “black president”, for even he would find himself beholden to the black masses clamoring for “their share”. A conservative black would feel compelled to assuage and appease this crowd nearly as much as would a leftist black - for if he did not, he would be attacked so viciously as to make his administration unworkable.
Time and time again on FR, I see posting after posting after posting after posting (had enough?) saying, to the effect: it’s not about racism.... blah, blah, blah.
Don’t those who post such statements realize that their compulsion to state as much is - in itself - yet another form of “white guilt”?
I have no white guilt. After surviving more than one unprovoked attack upon myself by blacks in my life, my opinions might be considered “racist” by some, but I’ve literally had them “beaten into me”. So you may call me racist if you wish, I do not care.
The “race factor” definitely IS one of the more critical factors this year. I daresay that if McCain wins, and if his victory is shown to be based upon a large contingent of white, democratic voters “voting against” Obama because of his race, it will have been proven to have been “the deciding factor”.
I accept that. I realize it may be “less than logical” to do so, but then, racial identification itself (as a human behavior trait) is based less on the intellect than it is on the emotions. It’s a “gut level” thing that bonds - and divides - humans on the most base level. I accept that, too, as one of the realities of life.
As noble as we _think_ ourselves to be, we cannot deny such things.
It is the attempt to deny them, that forms the fallacy of liberalism.
