Mistress of Disaster: Jamie Gorelick
American Thinker ^ | C. E. Wright

Posted on 09/20/2008 5:08:14 PM PDT by huac

"...One Jamie Gorelick is this American. And without pretending that she caused the loss of countless thousands of lives and countless billions of dollars of wealth by herself, she certainly did push some of the early domino's in catastrophic chain events that are a major factors in life in America today...Gorelick, an appointee of Bill Clinton, is the one who constructed the wall of separation that kept the CIA and the FBI from comparing notes and therefore invading the privacy of nice young men like, say, Muhammed Atta and Zacarius Moussaoui. While countless problems were uncovered in our intelligence operations in the wake of 9-11, no single factor comes close to in importance to Jamie Gorelick's wall...Her fingerprints are all over the Fannie Mae-Freddie Mac mess, which is to say the mess that is central in the entire mortgage-housing crisis. Without so much as one scintilla of real estate or finance experience, she was appointed as Vice Chairman of Fannie Mae in 1997 and served in that role through 2003, which is when most of the systemic cancers that came home to roost today happened. She was instrumental in covering up problems with Fannie Mae while employed there and took multiple millions in bonuses as she helped construct this house of cards...."

I wish these guys would get the story straight.

The “wall of separation” was not between the CIA & FBI.
It’s worse than that!
The “wall” was between the Intel division WITHIN THE FBI and the law enforcement division WITHIN THE FBI!!!!

She didn’t want the FBI to coordinate INTERNALLY!!!!

she certainly did push some of the early domino's

That would be "dominoes," or perhaps "dominos." I'm sorry to have to correct this error, coming ironically from a site calling itself American Thinker, and do not mean to diminish the importance of the content. But, at least a minimal standard of literacy needs to be maintained, if not with authors, then certainly with editors. That has obviously not been the case here.

Jamie Gorelick got big bonuses and bailed out of Fannie Mae before its scandals became news. She now works for the law firm which is representing Fannie Mae.

Jamie S. Gorelick, a partner in the Washington, D.C., law firm of Wilmer, Cutler, Pickering, Hale, and Dorr. Ms. Gorelick, who served on the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States, was vice chair of the Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae) from 1997 to 2003, deputy attorney general of the United States (1994-1997), general counsel of the Department of Defense (1993-1994), assistant to the secretary and counselor to the deputy secretary of energy (1979-1980), and a private-sector litigator.

Fannie Mae reported paying bonuses in 1998 to Vice Chairman Jamie S. Gorelick, a former deputy attorney general, $779,625

Former Clinton Administation Deputy Attorney General Jaime Gorelick now finds herself embroiled in a developing scandal @ The Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae) that threatens to boil over in to pre-election legislation that’s sure to cast in a bad light both Clinton Democrats and even some Republican Congressional leaders.

The Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight (OFHEO) now claims that Gorelick, former CEO James Johnson & the current executive team goosed Fannie’s earnings to clear financial performance hurdles and double their pay.

Former Fannie Mae chief James A. Johnson, who holds a top post in the Democratic presidential campaign and headed the Kennedy Center and the Brookings Institution; Smithsonian Institution Secretary Lawrence M. Small, who was Fannie Mae’s chief operating officer; and Washington lawyer Jamie Gorelick, a former Fannie vice chairman, who has served as deputy attorney general, the Pentagon’s top lawyer and a member of the 9-11 commission, joined Raines and Howard in receiving sizable bonuses that year. Regulators allege they were paid after the company improperly deferred other expenses.

Barack Obama’s Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac Connection
Tuesday, September 16, 2008

By John Gibson

Fannie and Freddie have also been places for big Washington Democrats to go to work in the semi-private sector and pocket millions. The Clinton administration’s White House Budget Director Franklin Raines ran Fannie and collected $50 million. Jamie Gorelick — Clinton Justice Department official — worked for Fannie and took home $26 million. Big Democrat Jim Johnson, recently on Obama’s VP search committee, has hauled in millions from his Fannie Mae CEO job.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,423701,00.html

Now remember: Obama’s ads and stump speeches attack McCain and Republican policies for the current financial turmoil. It is demonstrably not Republican policy and worse, it appears the man attacking McCain — Sen. Obama — was at the head of the line when the piggies lined up at the Fannie and Freddie trough for campaign bucks.

Financial Irregularities at Fannie Mae.

Perhaps some of you may not remember what Fannie Mae was caught doing after a whistleblower exposed the fraud (and was fired in retaliation). It was obvious that the books at Fannie Mae were being cooked:

As for other losses, they were routinely mischaracterized so that they could be amortized over years, not realized fully as they were supposed to be. By this method, the Fannie Mae management siphoned off millions of dollars in excess compensation to top management, including Gorelick.

It is certainly possible that the culture at Fannie Mae was so thoroughly corrupt that Jamie Gorelick did not know that cooking the books in this fashion was illegal, but it strains credulity to suppose that she did not know that the books were being cooked. I doubt that Gorelick was so stupid or incompetent not to notice that Fannie Mae profits were regularly reported in such a way as to maximize her bonuses.

SPRING 2002

ONLINE INTERVIEW

Q&A with Fannie Mae’s Jamie Gorelick
The vice-chairman sees “a very, very strong 2002” and says Fannie and Freddie are “managed safely”

In the wake of the Enron disaster, Federal National Mortgage Assn. (Fannie Mae) and Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corp. (Freddie Mac), the federally chartered mortgage banks that experienced explosive growth in 2001, have come under increased scrutiny. Once again, Republicans in Congress are threatening to conduct an investigation into the activities of the two — No. 7 and No. 2, respectively, on this year’s BusinessWeek 50 list of top performers — some say in hopes of revoking the portions of the Fannie and Freddie charters that gives an implicit government guarantee to their borrowing.

BusinessWeek Associate Economics Editor Margaret Popper spoke with Fannie Mae Vice-Chairman Jamie Gorelick for BW Online about the prospects for the coming year. Edited excerpts from their conversation follow:

Fannie Mae is the biggest single source of money for mortgages in the United States. From 1998 to 2004, the years covered by the OFHEO investigation, it was headed by former Clinton budget director Franklin Raines, whose top management team included former Clinton Justice Department official Jamie Gorelick, sometimes mentioned as a future attorney general in a Democratic administration. During that period, the report says, Raines and his team grossly overstated Fannie Mae’s earnings — to the tune of $10.6 billion — for the purpose of paying themselves big bonuses. “By deliberately and intentionally manipulating accounting to hit earnings targets,” the report says, “senior management maximized the bonuses and other executive compensation they received, at the expense of shareholders.”
