Known as the Steel Magnolia in her youth, Miss Rice has guided the US through the war on terror, looked tyrants in the eye and faced down terrorist threats during her nation's darkest hours.
But a new book reveals that she was not so steadfast in facing down her own more personal enemies within the Bush administration.
Instead, Miss Rice was so fazed by former Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld that she burst into tears at a meeting in the White House situation room.
The floodgates opened for the then national security adviser in February 2004, as the Bush administration was wrestling with growing instability in Iraq and the legal status of detainees at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp.

Good. Score one for Rumsfeld.
I don’t believe that for one moment Rummy made Condi cry come on UK Telegraph you are so boring me
She thinks Israel should bow down to Hamas.
See ya Condi.
Why was Cheney trying to delay the tribunals?
I hear ya.
I’m a bit disappointed that she cried in public, as it were. Never cry in front of the guys, never!
I don’t think Bush should have shown Powell the door in favor of Rice.
I assume so that the detainees could be held longer prior to the hearings.
Well, so what? Women cry. Rumsfeld’s a fighter. The sun rises. The sun sets.
This is newsworthy?
And I am not a Rice fan. I see her as a big disappointment. But her tears do not indicate any weakness on her part.
If true, yeesh, imagine what effect Putin would have on her...
Somebody should have made Rummy cry for his botching of the invasion of Iraq and aftermath.
This guy is a POS and I don’t believe him.
I respect and admire Ms. Rices accomplishments, but she was promoted beyond her capabilities.
I’m sorry, but I’m not buying it. Veiled attempt to make Americans worry about the strength of a women in the VP slot.
I was sorry to see Rumsfeld go.
Yeah, like Hillary’s alligator tears to get people to vote for her.
