RAHN: Cool look at the future
Washington Times ^ | September 17, 2008 | Richard Rahn

Posted on 09/20/2008 5:39:36 PM PDT by Delacon

How much in additional taxes are you willing to pay now in order to ensure that the Earth would not be 3 degrees warmer 100 years from now (assuming the science is even possible) - $100 or $1,000 or $10,000 or more? Should the government prevent us from selling some of our body parts to allow others to live or have better lives?

Are we likely to get better health care in the future with more or less government involvement? Are the advances in information technology, such as the Internet, increasing or reducing the power of governments to monitor and control our lives? Is the current global financial crisis the result of too little or misguided government regulation of the financial industry? Does globalization increase or reduce income inequality?

The above questions and many others were the subject of learned discussion at the 60th anniversary meeting of the Mont Pelerin Society (MPS) that just concluded here in Tokyo.

The Society was established in Mont Pelerin, Switzerland, by the late economist/philosopher and Nobel Laureate F.A. Hayek, with the objective of facilitating "an exchange of ideas between like-minded scholars in the hope of strengthening the principles and practice of a free society, and to study the workings, virtues, and defects of market-oriented economic systems."

The Society does not seek "to create an orthodoxy, to form or align itself with any particular party or parties, or conduct propaganda," nor does it take in the name of the Society positions on public policy issues.

Members come from many countries and include notable economists (including many Nobel prize winners) and other scholars representing the humanities, the law, and the natural sciences, as well as a few business people, high ranking government officials, and journalists...

This summer instead of it being 85 it would have been 88.
So instead of 73 today it would be 76.
This winter instead of 26 for a low it would be 29.

My, we are all going to die.

I WANT a world three degrees warmer. Less disease, longer growing season, milder winters.

Exactly. Why do the lefties want Mother Earth to be chilly with her teeth chattering? Don't they love Her?

There was a History Channel documentary on the warmer medieval period and subsequent mini ice age that slipped through liberal censorship. They’ve found documents in French archives of wine producer complaints to the French king of unfair competition from English wine merchants. I think to this day English climate isn’t conducive to good grape production.

I’ve been telling that to people, too!

Until there are grapes in Vinland again, it is not that warm yet. And even then, it will just be as warm as it was when Lief Erickson sailed the seas!! Maybe when that happens, archaeologists will find more Viking settlements in wherever Vinland was.

Yes, I think it was that same program that credited the Mini-Ice Age for the development of beer and ale. Since grapes wouldn't grow they had to find an alternative.

Here's to beer! Cheers!

Did you even know that we are in an iceage right now? We are in an interglacial period of an iceage. That means that we are in a period of relative warming that began 10-11 thousand years ago IN AN ICEAGE. Coincides with the beginning of civilization. It got warm in an iceage and humans thrived. These interglacial periods last for about 10 thousand years. We are due for another re-entry into another glacial period of our ice age. Our planet is prone to ice ages. Ever noticed why nobody refers to any point in history as a warm age?

But this can’t be true. The liberals, who are smarter than we are, have determined that the Earth’s correct temperature is whatever it was at the start of the 20th century. Therefore it is false that we are in an ice age.

Why do the lefties want Mother Earth to be chilly with her teeth chattering?

AGW is a crisis they have trumped up to coerce ordinary people to accept the socialism they have rejected in the past.

This is why they are desperate to say the science is settled and the debate is over. They want nothing to spoil this chance at total control.
