Pit Bulls attack, kill 4-month-old ["They ripped" her "to shreds," baby now identified.]
KVBC, WorldNow ^ | 15SEP08 | Jesse Corona reporting

It was a tragic scene in North Las Vegas involving a baby and two dogs. A four-month-old was attacked by two Pit Bulls. The dogs were attacking so viciously police say they had to shoot them dead upon arriving at the scene.

Residents in the neighborhood near Cheyenne and Martin Luther King say they are shocked but not surprised that it happened. Neighbors tell News 3 the two Pit Bulls were full grown dogs and when the baby girl arrived at the house four months ago they began to display aggressive behavior towards the child and anyone who held her.

"We knew that someone had shot somebody," a neighbor named Gloria told News 3.

The shots that Gloria and her neighbors heard was North Las Vegas police shooting the two dogs still on the attack.

"I look in. You could see the dogs laying dead," another neighbor, Jason Howell said. The shots prompted Howell to run to his neighbor's house to see if he could help. He says that what he saw will haunt him. "There are some peculiars I don't even want to discuss," said Howell.

Howell says other neighbors have commented on the dogs' aggressive behavior. "You don't have Pit Bulls around children, period," Howell said.

Also according to neighbors, the child's grandmother was at the home babysitting when the attack happened.

Neither police nor neighbors know what sparked the attack. "You have an aggressive breed dog, a Pit Bull and a child in the house. They ripped it to shreds," Howell said. What could the child possibly have done to instigate that? I have a daughter who is 18 months old. And the look on the father's face is something I'll never forget, ever. That's all I have to say."

The grandmother who was in the house sustained injuries. She was taken away by ambulance.

It was just a couple of months ago that a local animal control officer was attacked by three pit bulls. In July the officer responded to a home in North Las Vegas.

According to reports the dogs were loose in a neighbors yard near Centennial and Lamb. The officer managed to get away from the dogs and locked herself in her vehicle.

In April two 5-year-old boys were attacked by two Pit Bulls outside a home near Vegas Valley and McLeod. One was bitten in the face, the other in the leg. Both dogs were put to euthanized..

The ones I worry about are the ones I see wearing spiked collars accompanied by young gang-banger wannabee low-life humans.

If someone has a male pit that isn't neutered -- unless there is some obviously good reason for it -- you can lay odds that, that person's trailer smells like Barack Obama's airplane.

"how long would a meth addict stay at 350 pounds? Just curious, because the only ones I’ve ever seen pictures of look like skeletons with nasty, wrinkled skin."

That's a good question regarding those who ride ATVs just to get across their yards and consume mass quantities of sugar, salt, fat, nearly raw pork and alcohol along with slow, twanging, moaning, whining music in their extremely sedentary local government jobs (e.g., elementary school teaching). ...will take a chance on nausea to have a look at their further deterioration from time to time.

...well done! Actually, I’m not so citified and was pretty big for a while. ...almost killed me, and I’m out in the middle of nowhere, off of the grid. Some people do try to fit stereotypes, though. It’s a style thing.

I hear that Dixie brand slugs are good for those larger wild hogs, BTW. ;-)

:)

Actually, we live on the "country" side of Houston--only about 25 miles out, but it feels small-town country, and I like it. My husband (who weighs a mere 160# at age 52) does go out in the woods and hunt deer with his bow. And he helps the the owner of the golf course in our neighborhood by trapping hogs (a pistol works fine under those conditions). He finally caught so many, he even ran out of people to give them to, so he stopped trapping last Spring. I imagine the golf course is being over-run again, and he's fixin' to resume setting those traps. I'm getting tired of buying meat at the store. ;)

Side note back to the pit bulls :) We have a very dangerous chihuahua/Jack Russell mix puppy --he's a whopping 11 pounds. He's not a "barker", but he loves to run with the kids. Not too long ago, I had a neighbor riding by on a kid's bike, and my dog went running after her. She yelled some threatening stuff to me, which I didn't appreciate. I got in my car to find her and thought I'd talk peaceably with her. I found her and she went off on how she called the constable the day before because my dog chased her. I started to giggle, and that enraged her. She said the constable said he'd take the dog if she had to call again (??). I finally figured out what her issues were when she yelled at me, "I've got two Pit Bulls, and I don't let them out..." From that statement, I realized she'd received prejudice over her dogs, and decided she hated small dogs who were "innocent" to the public's scrutiny, thus would she never let a little dog go unleashed. I apologized, and just headed on home. She's new to the area. "dem ferner's bringun' meeniss ta ar peesibul land..." There's not much you can do with people like that except avoid them if at all possible.

Or maybe Granny should be armed and know how to shoot, whether there are dogs around or not.

Not to disparage the LEOs, but they’re perforce minutes away when seconds count.
