Chrysler has apparently quietly been working on 3 electric vehicles. A Dodge Viper style all electric sports car, a range-extended minivan with a 40 mile all electric range and 400 mile range on the 9 gallon tank, and a range-extended Jeep Wrangler that features a separate motor for each wheel.

At least one of the vehicles is expected to ship in 2010, with the others following in 2011 and 2012. Watch the video to see the cars.

How do they handle in flood waters?

Why doesn't Chrysler start putting out small diesels to power such excellent and useful vehicles like the Pacifica, or their minivans?

WHERE ARE THE DIESELS???????? For less than the price of these funkola batteries, one could build a diesel car like the rest of the world. If the present WH recumbent would sweep away the multi-state irregularities that are driving up diesel by mandating boutique blends, we could really have something here. VW TDI=50mpg with no Tesla weirdness.

Is electricity cheaper than gas? Unless the electricity comes from nuclear power, I don't understand the hooplah. Is a bank of batteries significantly lighter than an engine and transmission?

Unless the energy is coming from nuclear power plants, I'm not believing the hype.

Oh boy, a fleet of identical looking electric K- cars, available in white, blue, and red. (blue colored ones reserved for higher status people.

We’ll look like Russians driving their Lada’s around.

Those new diesels are sweet. Quiet and powerful. even Toyota has a cheap diesel coming out this year. A cheap car 1/3 the price of those electrics which will probably run forever, longer than the metal holds together on the car body.

Too be fair I think it looks pretty cool. The viper looking car has style and it would be pretty neat to feel the aceleration to 60 mph in under 5 sec with no gear shifting or engine noise. Unfortunately, once you get to where you are going you have to spend the night!

Oh God, I hope my in-laws don't buy one.

With no engine noise - you can bet the job of tire designers and other automotive engineers is going to get much more difficult as they try/are forced to eliminate the sources of noise that are presently masked by internal combustion engines.

"Is electricity cheaper than gas?"

Nope. The cars are more expensive to build, have a higher enviromental cost materials wise, last 1/3 as long as a regular gas car.

I don't know why they don't at least go with a diesel/electric/ high charge/discharge capacitor set up, using ethanol burning diesel engines which are super clean and efficient w/ electric brake recovery systems. They could make a decent diesel electric if they wanted to. They are already making mass transit buses using this kind of setup in Brazil, which NASA and Detroit helped develop ironically.

Toyota and Nissan have been selling these small diesels all over the world for years. Right now in Europe, you can buy a beautiful Alfa diesel, FIAT, Peugeot, BMW, VW, Mercedes, small, smooth running, powerful, rail injected, computerized burn, low emission diesels that meet German standards which are the EU standards, which match CA standards of 5 years ago.

We have just gone crazy here in regard to diesels ... too many green clymers with NO science on their side dictating crucial automotive policy with NO scientific basis .... and GOP dumbjohns going along. This one: definitely Bush's Fault.

Meanwhile over on gasoline alley, the car guys are still selling "Performance." WTF, over. A Corolla is faster than a Ferrari of the 60's? There is no need for a "family car" to have a gas engine bigger than 2L, or to go 0-60 in 6 seconds.

I can only imagine the price of the viper knock off. High discharge capacitors replace batteries in gas/electric designs. They last much longer than batteries, which just can't take constant charging/discharging.

In Brazil where they use diesel/electric/ capacitor designs, a small diesel engine runs at a constant speed and is coupled to a generator which provides all the power for the electric motors and charging the capacitor banks, which provide the extra power for that neck snapping acceleration. recovery braking also charges the capacitors. Those diesels are modified, running extremely high compression, around 28/1 and burn ethanol very efficiently, producing plenty of power for a tiny engine. (Brazil produces a lot of ethanol) It gets around 150 mi per gallon they say in testing. (that is a transit bus fully loaded in heavy traffic)

I wouldn’t mind that electric Wrangler, especially in a “rubicon” edition. The torque curve on electric motors makes them particularly ideal for rock-crawling and other low-speed off-roading. It would be particularly neat if the fossil-fuel motor were a diesel into the bargain. Yes, it would probably add $10k to the price of the current Rubicon, but would be the ultimate showroom-floor rock machine.

Yes, but those are the "old" ones. The new super diesels are new for this year, even quieter and more powerful and eficient. Only VW and BMW(?) will have some models for release in the USA this year.

I came in on the middle of Rush one day, and he was saying something about a 60 MPG SUV that the car companies weren’t allowed to sell in the USA? Perhaps I misunderstood. Looks like another potential campaign issue to me.

Actually, the task will fall to the sound system designer who will need to create engine noise soundtracks to cover it up.

While the price per btu is higher for electric, the motors are much more efficient that gas engines. Gas engines are 25 to 30% efficient. Electric to grid are 86%, about 3 times more efficient. The engine used in the volt will be much more efficient than 25% as it will run at several set speeds. Its only purpose will be to generate electric, not to drive the wheels. At $4 gasoline, the plug-in electric price will be the equivalent of 50 cent gas.

When the batteries are depleted, the car will still get 50mpg and its still higher for a car that size than anything on the road. The expected weight is 3500lbs, you would be lucky to get 30mpg with a turbo’d 4 cylinder engine.
