Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Two leading pro-life advocates are defending the use of the term "holocaust" to describe the deaths of 50 million unborn children from abortion over the last 35 years. The term has upset some Jewish leaders because it is typically used in reference to the genocide of Jews during Nazi rule in Germany.
Fr. Frank Pavone, the director of Priests for Life, and Dr. Alveda King, niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., issued a joint statement Tuesday about the use of the term.
They say the description of abortion as a holocaust "is not meant to trivialize what happened to our Jewish brothers and sisters."
"Approximately 50 million human beings have been killed in the United States since Roe v. Wade permitted abortion throughout pregnancy," they say. "Children have been torn limb from limb by surgical forceps and killed with suction tubes - not because of anything they did, but just because they existed."
"If abortion isn't a holocaust, we need to rewrite every dictionary," the pair explain.
King and Pavone continue their statement, saying:
"Periodically, protests arise when someone links the term 'holocaust' to abortion. The National Director of the Anti-Defamation League, Abraham Foxman, finds former Governor Mike Huckabee's reference to the 'holocaust of liberalized abortion' to be offensive. He writes that the Holocaust was a 'unique tragedy in human history.'"
"With all due respect to Mr. Foxman and others who recoil at the use of the word 'holocaust' to describe abortion, a clarification is in order."
"The term 'the Holocaust' refers to the slaughter of six million Jews by Hitler's Germany. The proper noun attached to this horrific period, however, does not preempt the use of the word in its common meaning to describe the killing of a million Rwandans, over one million Americans, or two million Cambodians; neither does it prevent its use in describing the killing of 50 million Americans. "
"Abortion is a holocaust that has taken and continues to take more human lives than any holocaust in human history. We are deeply concerned at how easily so many people trivialize this slaughter of the unborn, especially since it hasn't yet stopped."
Both the Holocaust and the abortion holocaust (which has claimed OVER ONE BILLION lives worldwide in the past century) rightly use the term as they both describe the unspeakable evil of the culture of death and racial and religious hatred.

When I point out the history of Margaret Sanger and Planned Parenthood, I am told to look at the benefits they provide now, and not what the movement was founded on. But if planned parenthood is trying to help people why are the majority of their clinics in poor, minority neighborhoods, and why do they go after the uneducated and those who may be carrying a special needs child?
No offence to the Jewish folks on FR, but since when is “Holocaust” a (tm) for only one group?
The Holocaust was the genocide of Jews; abortion is the genocide of an entire generation.
This is like saying that we should appreciate the fact that Hitler gave us the Volkswagen and highways.
And the use of the term "Holocaust" by one DOES NOT lessen the despicable horror and evil of the other.
I have no idea why the world does not cry out in pain at the loss of so many innocents. I remember the horror I felt when ny state made abortion legal....I was shocked. To this day I can still feel that shock hit me.

'Being Human' spotlights 40 Days for Life just prior to kickoff!
Just days before simultaneous campaigns launch in more than 170 cities in the United States and Canada, the 40 Days for Life effort was the focus of a world premiere documentary on the EWTN global network. Here's a brief excerpt:
"This episode of BeingHuman focuses on the stories and successes that prayer, fasting, and peaceful vigil have accomplished through 40 Days for Life campaigns that have now spread across the country and around the globe," said national campaign director David Bereit. "This show offers a great opportunity to get people in communities across the nation involved in this initiative."
The campaign runs September 24 through November 2.
Which will be the first abortion-free states?
Despite the increasingly shrill rhetoric of the abortion industry, the simple truth is that business is off, said David Bereit, national campaign director of 40 Days for Life.
Abortion numbers have dropped so significantly that several states are now down to only one or two remaining abortion centers," he said. "This falls 40 Days for Life campaign presents a great opportunity to finish the life-saving work in these states, creating abortion-free zones and encouraging other states to follow suit.
This fall, 40 Days for Life vigils will take place at the last remaining abortion centers in North Dakota and Mississippi, states which each have only one remaining abortion facility, as well as the last two abortion facilities in Nebraska and the last two in Kentucky.

Get involved with 40 Days for Life!
David Bereit, the national campaign director of 40 Days for Life, recently spoke to a pro-life group in Baltimore. His remarks were captured in the video below. He related stories about some of the campaign's heroes and listed six key points involved in discerning your role in this fall's 40 Days for Life effort:

and they say the devil does not exist.
Rational people answer, no problem, no such gene exists.
The devil is pulling out all the stops and the evidence is all around us. The murder of the unborn, the rampant fornication, decay of the family, and utter contempt for God are all indicators. Our liberal countrymen would do well to head the warning: "Do not be deceived, God is not mocked." (Galatians 6:7)
With all due respect to Jews everywhere, no one owns the word. It aptly describes any wholesale slaughter. The murder of 40 million individuals is unmatched in human depravity.
